Overview
Bannerbear review
This Bannerbear review covers what Bannerbear is used for, its key features, Bannerbear pricing and API credits, the Bannerbear API, where it shines and falls short, and how it compares with other tools. Bannerbear works in two steps. You design a template once in its browser editor, with text, image, shape and QR code layers. Then you send data to the template through the API, a no-code integration or a URL, and the platform renders a new image, animation or PDF for every record. Bannerbear offers automated image and video generation for teams that need hundreds or thousands of on-brand graphics without opening a design app each time. In this review we look at it from the point of view of the users who build those templates. Jon Yongfook launched Bannerbear in 2020 as a bootstrapped company, and the API has been the core of the product since.
What is Bannerbear used for?
Bannerbear is used to automate visual content that follows a fixed layout but changes per item. Typical examples are social media visuals for every new blog post in WordPress or another CMS, open graph images for web pages, e-commerce banners and product images with prices, real estate listing graphics, event and speaker cards, certificates, quote cards, podcast covers and personalized images in email campaigns. Marketing teams connect it to Airtable, Google Sheets or a CMS so a new record produces a new graphic. Developers call the API from their own app to auto-generate a share graphic for each user profile, and agencies use it to run automated workflows for clients.
Video is the second use case. Bannerbear can render short animations from a template, add captions or overlays to existing video, trim and resize clips, and turn a video into an animated GIF preview. PDFs work the same way: multi-page templates become certificates, reports or one-pagers.
Key features
- Template editor: a browser-based design editor with layers for text, images, shapes, QR codes, barcodes, star ratings and Lottie animations. You can import a design, use uploaded fonts and brand colors, and start from a library of ready-made templates.
- REST API: generate images, animations and PDFs by sending modifications to a template created in the editor. Requests are asynchronous by default, with webhooks when the result is ready, and a synchronous endpoint with a 10-second timeout (Bannerbear API reference).
- No-code integrations: Zapier, Make, Airtable, Google Sheets, forms and 50+ other apps, so a new row, form entry or post can trigger a render.
- Instant URLs and signed URLs: build an image URL with the data in the query string, and Bannerbear renders the image when the URL is first loaded. Useful for open graph images.
- Workflows: chain several steps, such as render an image, add it to a video and create a GIF, in one workflow run.
- File formats: JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, PDF, MP4 and transparent MOV, at 1x to 4x scale for higher quality.
- AI features: every paid plan includes a monthly quota of AI credits for AI-powered features inside Bannerbear.
Bannerbear pricing
Bannerbear sells monthly plans with a quota of API credits. The plans below come from the Bannerbear pricing page as of September 2026.
- Free trial: 30 API credits, no credit card required, limited to one workspace and three image templates, three animation templates, three workflows and three Instant URLs.
- Automate: $49 a month, 1,000 API credits and 200 AI credits, REST API and 50+ integrations.
- Scale: $149 a month, 10,000 API credits (tiers up to 40,000) and 600 AI credits, adds Instant URLs and your own S3 storage.
- Enterprise: $299 a month, 50,000 API credits (tiers up to 2,000,000) and 1,250 AI credits, adds SSO, audit logs and zero data retention.
The usage metric is API credits. One image render at 1x scale costs one credit. Animations cost two credits per second of video, and utilities such as video trimming cost one to four credits each.
The cost surprise to check is video and scale. A 15-second animation uses 30 credits, so a plan that covers 1,000 images covers far fewer videos. Rendering at 2x or higher scale for sharper images uses more credits too. Instant URLs, which many teams want for open graph images, start on the Scale plan, not on Automate. There is no free tier after the trial, and every new image generated counts against the monthly quota.
Bannerbear REST API: API key, API calls and webhooks
The Bannerbear API is a REST API for automated image generation. You create an API key in a project, send it in the authorization header of each request, pick a Bannerbear template (or set up a new template in the template editor) and send API requests with a JSON list of modifications, such as the text of the title layer or the URL of the photo layer. The API returns a 202 response right away and processing continues in the background; your app receives the finished image through a webhook or polls for it. For short jobs the synchronous endpoint returns the image in the same request. The rate limit is 60 POST requests per 10 seconds, so large batches should be queued. The API reference and tutorials on the Bannerbear blog have examples for every endpoint and content type. For teams without developers, automation platforms such as Zapier and Make, plus Simple URLs, make the same calls without code, and the Bannerbear support docs have step-by-step tutorials for each integration.
Does Bannerbear support image and video generation?
Yes. Some competitor pages say Bannerbear's template editor only creates image templates and that it has not added features since 2021. Bannerbear's own documentation contradicts both claims: the pricing page lists animation templates in every plan and in the trial, and the current v5 API has endpoints for animations, video tools (trim, resize, concatenate, overlay), GIF previews, PDFs and multi-step workflows. Image generation is still the core; its video generation capabilities are narrower than a dedicated video editor. Animations are short, template-driven clips, and each second of output costs two API credits, so long videos get expensive.
Generate images with Bannerbear, Placid or Canva
Placid is the closest alternative: it also generates images, videos and PDFs from templates through an API and no-code integrations, with credit-based plans and unlimited free previews for testing integrations (Placid pricing). Canva is a design app first; its bulk create and brand templates cover some of the same work for teams that design by hand, but it is not built to render banners on every page view. Bannerbear is the right tool when graphics must be created automatically from records; Canva is the better pick when a designer edits each graphic.
Where Bannerbear shines — and where it falls short
Strengths:
- Templates plus records give consistent, on-brand banners at any volume.
- A clean REST API with webhooks, synchronous calls and signed URLs.
- Works without code through Zapier, Make, Airtable and Google Sheets.
- Images, animations, video tools and PDFs in one product.
Trade-offs:
- The subscription starts at $49 a month with no permanent free tier.
- Video uses credits fast.
- The template editor is simpler than a full design app.
- Access to Instant URLs and custom storage needs the Scale plan or higher.
How Bannerbear compares
- Placid: template-based image, video and PDF generation with a similar API and no-code integrations.
- Canva: a design tool with bulk create for teams that edit graphics by hand.
- Zapier, Make and n8n: automation platforms that trigger Bannerbear renders from other apps.
- Airtable and Google Sheets: common data sources that feed Bannerbear templates.
- Figma: where many teams design the graphic before rebuilding it as a Bannerbear template.
Is Bannerbear worth it?
Bannerbear is worth it when your team makes the same kind of graphic again and again with different data: social images per post, product banners, listing images or certificates. At $49 a month for 1,000 images, it replaces hours of manual design work. It is less of a fit when you need a few graphics a month, when each design is unique, or when most of your output is video.
