Cargo
Website builder for artists, designers and creative studios
Cargo is a website builder for artists, designers and photographers who want a portfolio site with full design control and one flat price.
Overview
Cargo review
This Cargo site review covers what the Cargo website builder does, its features, pricing, how it compares with other website builders, and where it falls short. Cargo started in 2009 as Cargo Collective, a publishing platform and community for creative work; the current version, Cargo 3, runs at cargo.site. You create websites from a template, then change every element, from layout and type to the CSS behind it. That freeform canvas makes Cargo websites look distinctive, and it is also what takes time to learn.
What is Cargo used for?
Cargo is used to create portfolio websites: for graphic designers, illustrators and architects, for studios and agencies, for exhibition pages and for small shops that sell prints or books. Schools also use it for student portfolios. The websites look more like designed objects than templates, which is why they show up in galleries such as One Page Love and a1.gallery. According to a1.gallery's review of Cargo websites, the platform is most popular with photographers and small creative studios, and many strong examples come from Tokyo, Seoul, Berlin and London.
One account can create many websites, each with its own place and purpose: a main portfolio, a page for one project, a shop for your brand.
Key features
- Visual design editor with templates: start from a template, then move, resize and style design elements freely. Pages mix text, images, videos, galleries, slideshows and thumbnail indexes, so the content leads and the layout follows.
- Typography: a large font menu with variable fonts, plus your own fonts uploaded or embedded (Cargo 3 Docs: Adding Fonts).
- Code when you want it: a CSS editor for the whole website and a Code View per page for the HTML (Cargo 3 Docs: CSS and HTML).
- Real-time multi-user editing: several people can work on the same website at once.
- Unlimited websites on cargo.site addresses, all in one subscription.
- Shop: sell products without per-transaction fees from Cargo.
- Hosting included: the platform hosts every website, so there is nothing to install, update or tune for performance; image-heavy pages are the main performance factor to watch.
Cargo pricing
Cargo has one price with no tiers. According to the Cargo 3 rates page (September 2026):
- Subscription: $14 a month billed yearly, or $19 billed monthly. Unlimited public websites on cargo.site domains, multi-user editing and one custom domain.
- Extra custom domains: $2 a month billed yearly, or $3 billed monthly, each.
- Shop add-on: free to test privately; $5.50 a month billed yearly, or $9 billed monthly, to accept payments. Your payment provider's fees still apply.
Building a Cargo site is free in private; you subscribe only to publish it.
The cost surprise to check is the add-ons: every extra website on its own domain adds a domain fee, and selling adds the commerce fee. A portfolio, a studio website and a shop on three domains cost the base price plus two domains plus commerce.
Cargo vs Squarespace, Wix and Webflow
Cargo is the better website builder for creatives who want an unusual layout and fine control over typography and CSS. The other three are better for business websites that need blogging, a CMS for lots of content, bookings, email marketing and SEO settings. Cargo's editor is freer but less easy for beginners, and some people find the interface unusual at first. TechRadar and a1.gallery both note that Cargo is weaker at content management, blogging and SEO for competitive keywords, and stronger at image-led, curated layouts. Cargo also keeps one flat price where the others use tiered plans.
Where Cargo shines — and where it falls short
Strengths:
- Design freedom for creatives, with CSS and HTML access to every element.
- One flat price with unlimited websites on cargo.site addresses.
- Custom and variable fonts.
- A shop without per-transaction fees from Cargo.
Trade-offs:
- A learning curve compared with a simple drag-and-drop website builder platform.
- Limited CMS, blogging and SEO features; no scheduling or email marketing.
- Extra domains and commerce cost more on top of the base price.
- Not built for large content websites or web apps.
How Cargo compares
- Squarespace: polished templates and business tools for small companies.
- Wix: a general website builder with many apps and plugins.
- Webflow: pro design and CMS control for larger, dynamic websites.
- Framer: design-first websites with animation.
- Readymag: editorial layouts and long-read projects.
- Carbonmade: simple portfolio websites for creatives.
- Carrd: cheap one-page websites and landing pages.
- WordPress: open-source flexibility, with more maintenance.
Is Cargo worth it?
Cargo is worth it for artists, designers and studios who want a portfolio that looks designed rather than templated, and who will learn a less conventional editor. The flat price with unlimited websites is good value for creatives with several portfolios. This review's verdict: a design tool first, a business website builder second. It is less of a fit for businesses that need blogging, bookings, marketing tools or strong SEO out of the box; Wix or Webflow serve those better.
