MuleSoft is Salesforce's Anypoint Platform for building, securing and managing APIs and integrations across cloud apps and legacy systems.

Overview

MuleSoft (Salesforce) review

This MuleSoft review covers what the Anypoint Platform does, its key features, MuleSoft pricing and Mule Credits, how it relates to Salesforce, where it shines and falls short, and how it compares with other integration tools. MuleSoft connects systems that were never built to talk to each other: ERP, CRM, databases, SaaS apps and on-premises legacy systems. Developers build integrations and APIs with the Mule runtime engine, publish them as reusable assets and manage them from one control plane. MuleSoft was founded in 2006 as MuleSource, and Salesforce bought it in May 2018 in a deal reported at $6.5 billion (Wikipedia).

What is MuleSoft used for?

MuleSoft is used for enterprise integration and application integration: moving data between systems, exposing that data as APIs and governing those APIs at scale. Typical projects are a single customer view that pulls data from CRM, billing and support into one place, order-to-cash flows between an e-commerce front end and an ERP, and unlocking siloed third-party systems for new mobile or partner apps. Companies also use it for B2B and EDI exchange with trading partners, for automating workflows and repetitive tasks, and more and more for connecting AI agents to company data.

The approach MuleSoft promotes is API-led connectivity. Integrations are split into three layers of APIs: system APIs that unlock a backend, process APIs that combine data, and experience APIs for a specific app or channel. Because each layer is a reusable asset, the next project can build on work already done instead of starting over. IT leaders like this because it keeps a large integration estate organized and turns integration needs into a repeatable process that helps solve business problems across the organization, which is why MuleSoft often sits at the center of digital transformation programs.

Key features

The MuleSoft Anypoint Platform covers the entire lifecycle of an API or integration, from design to operations, on one control plane.

Build: Anypoint Code Builder and Anypoint Studio

Developers build APIs and integrations in Anypoint Code Builder, which runs in VS Code or the browser, or in Anypoint Studio, the older Eclipse-based desktop IDE. Both use DataWeave, MuleSoft's language for transforming data, and both give access to Anypoint Connectors: an extensive library of pre-built connectors for Salesforce, SAP, Workday, databases, file systems, message queues and Google Cloud, AWS and Azure services. Anypoint Exchange is the catalog where teams find and share APIs, connectors, templates and other reusable assets.

Manage: Anypoint API Manager and Anypoint API Governance

Anypoint API Manager applies policies such as security, rate limiting and client access to every API. Anypoint API Governance checks API designs against company rules before they go live, and Anypoint API Experience Hub publishes APIs to internal teams or partners in a developer portal.

Run: Anypoint Runtime Manager and hybrid deployments

Anypoint Runtime Manager deploys and monitors apps on CloudHub 2.0 (fully managed), Runtime Fabric or your own servers, so organizations can run cloud, on-premises and hybrid deployments with high performance and one view of operations. Anypoint Partner Manager adds B2B and EDI integration with trading partners.

AI and agents

Omni Gateway (the next version of Flex Gateway) secures API and AI traffic, MCP support gives AI agents access to APIs, and Agent Fabric governs agents across the company.

MuleSoft pricing

MuleSoft does not sell fixed plans with list prices. According to the MuleSoft pricing page (September 2026), packages start at $2,000 a month, billed annually, and each package includes core platform capabilities plus an allocation of Mule Credits. Packages are organized by use case: govern APIs and AI, manage agents, connect apps, process documents, or the full portfolio.

Mule Credits are the usage metric: one shared pool of credits that integrations, API management, automation and agents all draw from. Per MuleSoft's documentation, credits are consumed by flows, messages, managed APIs and agents, gateway requests, document pages, private spaces, network connections and load balancers. Credits reset on the first of each month, unused credits do not roll over, and usage above the contract is billed as a monthly overage.

There are three buying models: Pre-Purchase (credits upfront, lower rates at volume), Pre-Commit (a $50,000 minimum annual commitment billed monthly) and Unlimited (a custom fixed price with uncapped credits). A 30-day free trial covers the full portfolio.

The cost surprise to check is total cost, not the starting price. Real contracts for enterprise estates are far above $2,000 a month once you add more credits, private spaces, support and certified developers, so plan your spend across the whole business, not only the first team. Estimate your flows, message volume and API traffic before you sign, and watch the usage dashboard in the first months, because overages are billed monthly.

Does the MuleSoft Anypoint Platform need coding?

Partly. MuleSoft is low code: integrations are built by dragging connectors and components into flows, and many templates and pre-built connectors avoid custom work. But real projects need developers who know DataWeave, API design and the platform's deployment options. Business users can use MuleSoft's automation tools for simple workflows, but the Anypoint Platform itself is a developer tool. The learning curve is steep, and MuleSoft offers training and certifications to shorten it.

MuleSoft vs Salesforce: what is the difference?

MuleSoft is a Salesforce company, but it is not part of the Salesforce CRM. Salesforce manages customer relationships. MuleSoft connects Salesforce, and any other system, to the rest of the company's data. MuleSoft works with any stack and is often used in companies that do not run Salesforce at all. Inside the Salesforce world it powers integrations for Agentforce and Data Cloud, and Salesforce Flow can call MuleSoft APIs.

Where MuleSoft shines — and where it falls short

Strengths:

  • One unified platform for integration, API management and governance.
  • API-led connectivity and Anypoint Exchange make integration assets reusable.
  • Deploys fully managed in the cloud, on-premises or hybrid.
  • Strong connector library and deep Salesforce integration.
  • Mature security, access control and enterprise support across industries such as finance, healthcare and the public sector.

Trade-offs:

  • Expensive, with prices set per contract rather than published per plan.
  • A steep learning curve: DataWeave and the platform need trained developers.
  • Credit-based usage is hard to forecast before you know your volumes.
  • Too heavy for small teams that only need to connect a few SaaS apps.

How MuleSoft compares

  • Boomi Flow: Boomi's low-code workflow apps, part of an integration platform that competes directly with MuleSoft.
  • Workato Workbot: Workato's enterprise automation platform, easier for business teams.
  • Microsoft Power Automate: automation for Microsoft 365 and Azure shops.
  • Tray.io: API-first automation with a lower entry cost.
  • Zapier, Make and n8n: SaaS automation for smaller teams, far cheaper and simpler.
  • Fivetran: data pipelines into a warehouse, not application integration.
  • Salesforce Flow: automation inside Salesforce itself.

Is MuleSoft worth it?

MuleSoft is worth it for large organizations with many systems, strict security needs and a long-term integration and API strategy, especially when Salesforce is at the center. The reuse, governance and hybrid deployment options pay off at scale. It is hard to justify for small teams, for simple app-to-app automation, or without budget for trained developers; tools like Workato, Make or n8n cover that for much less. If you want help with an integration project or a MuleSoft migration, integration consultants and low-code agencies on LowCodeDevs can take it on.
