AutomationAnywhere
Enterprise RPA and agentic automation platform for business processes
Automation Anywhere is an enterprise RPA and AI agent platform that automates business processes across apps, documents and systems.
Overview
AutomationAnywhere review
This AutomationAnywhere review covers what the platform is used for, its key features, Automation Anywhere pricing, how its robotic process automation compares with UiPath and Microsoft Power Automate, where it shines and falls short, and whether it is worth it. Automation Anywhere is RPA software: it builds bots that work in the UI of existing systems the way a person would: they log in, click, copy data between screens and fill in forms. On top of that RPA core, the company now sells an Agentic Process Automation System, in which AI agents handle unstructured data and decisions while bots and APIs do the repetitive tasks. The platform runs cloud-native, with public, private and hybrid deployment options (Automation Anywhere).
What is Automation Anywhere used for?
Automation Anywhere is used to automate high-volume business processes that span multiple systems without changing those systems. RPA solutions on the platform cover tasks such as invoice processing and accounts payable in finance, order entry, claims handling, customer onboarding, HR onboarding, and IT tasks such as user provisioning. Software robots reduce manual effort, human error and the need for human intervention on repetitive tasks, which raises operational efficiency and data accuracy, so teams can focus on exceptions, customer satisfaction and higher-value work. Marketing and sales teams use bots too, for lead data entry and CRM updates in Salesforce. Document Automation reads invoices, forms and other unstructured data, and AI agents decide what to do with the result.
The typical buyer is a large organization with a center of excellence that runs automation as a program: business users suggest processes, developers build and maintain bots, and IT governs security and deployment. Non technical users can build simple automations, but most enterprise automation on the platform is built by trained RPA developers.
Key features
- Automation Workspace and bot builder: a low-code, drag-and-drop editor for creating bots, with recorders for web and desktop apps, and Prompt-to-Automate to start a bot from a natural language description.
- Control Room: the web console to deploy, schedule and monitor bots, manage credentials, and set roles and governance for teams.
- Attended and unattended automation: attended automations help a user on their desktop; unattended automations run tasks on their own on servers or virtual machines, which is where RPA delivers efficiency at scale.
- Document Automation: extracts data from invoices, forms and other documents with generative AI, with human review for low-confidence fields.
- AI Agent Studio: build goal-driven AI agents, powered by the vendor's Process Reasoning Engine, that decide and act inside a process (AI Agent Studio).
- Automator AI and Mozart Orchestrator: generative AI tools to build and fix automations faster, and a composer that connects agents, bots, documents and APIs in one governed workflow.
- Integration: packages and connectors for Salesforce, SAP, Microsoft 365, ServiceNow and REST APIs, next to UI automation for systems without an API.
- Process discovery: records how people work to find processes worth automating.
Automation Anywhere pricing
Automation Anywhere does not publish a current price list; enterprise plans are quoted by sales per bot creator, bot runner and add-on. What is public, as of September 2026:
- Community Edition: free, for individuals, students and small businesses. Includes drag-and-drop automation, Prompt-to-Automate and generative AI document extraction. A small business must have fewer than 250 machines, fewer than 250 users and under $5 million in annual revenue, may use it on at most five machines and may process up to 100 document pages a month (Community Edition).
- Cloud Starter Pack: announced in 2020 at $750 a month for one bot creator, one Control Room and one unattended bot runner, with extra unattended runners at $500 a month and attended runners at $125 a month (press release). Check with sales whether these list prices still apply.
- Enterprise: custom pricing for larger deployments, AI agents, Document Automation volumes and process discovery. Third-party trackers report a median annual spend around $42,000 (Automation Atlas).
The usage metric is licenses: bot creators for developers, unattended and attended bot runners for execution, plus page volumes for Document Automation and add-ons for AI agents. The cost surprise to check is everything around the licenses: the machines or virtual machines that run unattended bots, the time RPA developers spend to build and maintain automations when a UI changes, and training. Ask for a quote that covers a full year of maintenance, not only the first bots.
Robotic process automation and agentic automation: how it works
Robotic process automation is software technology that copies the steps a person takes in a UI. That makes RPA the fastest way to automate tasks across legacy applications that have no API, such as old desktop apps, terminals and portals, and it lets RPA developers deliver automation solutions without changing those applications. The trade-off is fragility: when a screen changes, the bot breaks and needs maintenance. Automation Anywhere's answer is agentic automation. AI agents handle the steps that need judgment, such as reading an email or classifying a document, while RPA tasks and API calls handle the steps that must be exact. The result is end-to-end process automation with higher accuracy and productivity than RPA alone. RPA is still a thing in 2026, but it is now one layer of a wider process automation stack rather than the whole story.
Enterprise automation evaluation: choosing an RPA tool
An evaluation of RPA technology and other enterprise automation solutions should start from your business processes and data, not the vendor's feature list. Pick one or two high-ROI processes with stable screens and a clear volume, then test each vendor on the same tasks. Look at:
- Setup and deployment: cloud, hybrid or on-premises, and how fast developers can deploy automations to production.
- Scalability and reliability: how the Control Room schedules many bots, retries failed runs and alerts on errors.
- Integration: whether automations can integrate with systems through APIs where they exist and fall back to UI automation where they do not.
- Security and governance: credential vaults, role-based access, audit logs and AI governance.
- Skills: whether business users can build simple bots and how many trained developers you need for the rest.
- Insights: dashboards that show hours saved, success rates and the ROI per process.
The common challenge is not the first bot but the hundredth: maintenance, change management and a pipeline of new processes decide whether an RPA program succeeds.
Automation Anywhere vs UiPath, Microsoft Power Automate and Blue Prism
UiPath and Automation Anywhere are the two long-standing leaders in enterprise RPA and cover similar ground: automation builders for developers, orchestration, document processing, governance and AI agents. UiPath has the larger developer community and a desktop-first studio; Automation Anywhere pushed earlier to a cloud-native, browser-based platform. Microsoft Power Automate is the budget and Microsoft 365 option: desktop flows are included with Windows, and cloud flows cover SaaS integration, but large unattended RPA estates need more governance work. Blue Prism (now SS&C Blue Prism), IBM and SAP Build Process Automation are the other names on most shortlists of Automation Anywhere alternatives. Which is better depends on your existing systems, your cloud strategy and the skills of your team; run a proof of concept on one real process with two vendors. Blue Prism suits strictly governed, developer-led RPA; Power Automate suits organizations that want a user friendly tool inside Microsoft 365.
Where Automation Anywhere shines — and where it falls short
Strengths:
- Cloud-native, browser-based platform with strong governance and security for enterprise automation.
- RPA, document processing and AI agents in one system.
- Works with legacy applications through the UI when there is no API.
- Free Community Edition and Pathfinder University training and certification.
Trade-offs:
- Pricing is quote-based and expensive for small teams.
- UI-based automations need maintenance when screens change.
- Building reliable bots at scale needs trained developers, not only business users.
- A smaller developer community than UiPath or Power Automate.
How Automation Anywhere compares
The Automation Anywhere alternatives listed on LowCodeDevs:
- UiPath: the other enterprise RPA leader, with a large developer community and a desktop studio.
- Microsoft Power Automate: RPA and cloud flows for Microsoft 365 organizations at a lower entry price.
- Pegasystems: case management and workflow with RPA as a part.
- Appian: low-code process automation platform with RPA and case management.
- Workato: enterprise integration and automation through APIs rather than user interfaces.
- Zapier, Make and n8n: API-based workflow automation for SaaS apps, much cheaper for simple integrations.
Is Automation Anywhere worth it?
Automation Anywhere is worth it for large organizations with many repetitive, high-volume business processes across legacy and SaaS systems, a budget for licenses and RPA developers who can build and maintain automations. The ROI is highest where processes are stable and the volume is large, and the robust Control Room gives the governance and scale that enterprise automation needs. It is less of a fit for small teams, for processes that can be automated through APIs with Zapier, Make or Workato, and for companies already standardized on Microsoft Power Automate.
