Gumroad
Platform for selling digital products, memberships and courses to your audience
Gumroad is an e-commerce platform where creators sell digital products, memberships and courses for a fee per sale, not a monthly price.
Overview
Gumroad review
This Gumroad review covers what Gumroad is used for, its key features, Gumroad fees and pricing, how payouts and taxes work, where it shines and falls short, and how it compares with other creator platforms. Gumroad is a simple way to start selling online: you upload a file, set a price and share a link. Customers pay on a Gumroad checkout page and get the product immediately. There is no monthly subscription fee. Instead, Gumroad charges a percentage and a fixed amount per transaction, and it acts as the merchant of record, so it handles tax obligations such as sales tax and VAT for you. That makes it popular with creators who want to sell digital products and make money online without building a store first.
What is Gumroad used for?
Gumroad is used to sell digital products directly to an audience. Typical products are e-books and PDFs, templates, design assets, presets and brushes, music and sample packs, software with license keys, video tutorials and online courses. Many creators also run memberships and subscriptions for a newsletter, a community or a library of content. Writers, designers, developers, musicians and course creators use it most, from people testing a first idea to Gumroad creators running a small business with recurring revenue.
The typical setup is simple. You build an audience on social media, a newsletter or a blog, and use Gumroad for the checkout experience and the customer list. Gumroad also runs Discover, Gumroad's marketplace where buyers can browse and find new products, but for most creators the marketing strategy is to send buyers through their own direct links.
Key features
- Product pages and storefront: a page editor for product pages and a profile that works as a simple store, with your own colors. You can link a custom domain or embed the checkout on an existing site.
- Digital products and file delivery: sell downloads, e-books, audio, video and courses. Buyers get access right after payment. You can offer multiple versions (for example PDF and ePub) at different prices.
- Memberships and subscriptions: recurring payments monthly, quarterly, every six months or yearly, with access to content for as long as the customer stays subscribed.
- Flexible pricing: pay what you want pricing, discount codes, and payments in multiple currencies.
- License keys: Gumroad can generate license keys for software products.
- Email marketing: post updates, send broadcasts to customers and followers, and set up automated workflows. You can import an existing email list and export followers and customers at any time.
- Affiliate tools: let others promote and sell products for you for a commission. Fees on affiliate sales are split between the affiliate and the creator in proportion to the commission.
- Analytics: sales data to see which products and links perform, plus CSV exports with a fee breakdown for every sale.
- Tax handling: Gumroad has been the merchant of record since January 1, 2025, so it collects and remits sales tax and VAT worldwide (Gumroad pricing).
Gumroad pricing and Gumroad fees
Gumroad has no monthly fees and no plans to choose from. It is free to start selling, and you pay only when you make a sale. The fees below come from Gumroad's pricing page and its fees help article as of September 2026.
- Direct sales: 10% + $0.50 per transaction for sales through your profile or direct links, plus sales tax where it applies.
- Payment processor fees: on direct sales, credit card processing of 2.9% + $0.30 for credit card payments, or PayPal fees, come on top of the fee Gumroad charges.
- Discover marketplace: a flat 30% per transaction when a new customer finds you through Gumroad's marketplace. This includes all processing fees.
- High-volume discount: once your paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales that month cost 5% + $0.50 instead of 10% + $0.50. It resets on the 1st of each month and applies automatically.
- Free products: no fee on products you give away for free.
What Gumroad costs per sale
A $20 direct sale with a card payment pays 10% + $0.50 ($2.50) to Gumroad plus about $0.88 in card processing, so the total fees are about $3.38 and you keep about $16.62 of the money. On a $5 product the fixed $0.50 and $0.30 take a much bigger share, which is why many creators price products above $10.
The cost surprise to check is how the fees add up as a business scales. Up to $20,000 a month in sales, Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50 of every sale before processing, so a creator selling $10,000 a month pays more than $1,000 a month in platform fees alone. Other platforms with a monthly subscription fee and zero transaction fees often have lower fees at that level. Check the Discover fee too: a buyer who finds you on Gumroad's marketplace costs 30%.
Gumroad payouts, direct deposit and tax obligations
Sales land in your Gumroad balance and are paid out to you by direct deposit to your bank account in your local currency, or by PayPal where bank payouts are not available (Getting paid by Gumroad).
- Payout schedule: daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly, with a minimum balance of $100 (higher in some countries). Weekly, monthly and quarterly payouts include sales through the previous Friday and hold each sale for at least 7 days.
- Payout fees: bank payouts carry no payout fee from Gumroad. PayPal payouts are made in USD and have a 2% processing fee.
- Currency conversion: amounts are converted at the exchange rate at the time of sale, typically a mid-market rate, and paid out in your local currency. Your bank or PayPal may add currency conversion fees on top.
- Instant payouts: eligible accounts can pay out settled balances from $1 to a connected debit card.
- Refunds: when you refund a sale, Gumroad returns its own fee on the refunded part and keeps only the payment processing portion.
- Sales tax and VAT: as merchant of record, Gumroad collects and remits sales tax, VAT and GST, so creators who sell internationally do not register for taxes in every country. That global tax compliance is included in the fee. Your own business still owes income tax on its earnings.
Is Gumroad legit and safe?
Yes. Gumroad is a US company that has run its platform for more than ten years, and payments are processed by Stripe and PayPal, so buyers never share card details with the creator. For buyers, the main risk is the product itself: Gumroad hosts products from many independent creators, so check the creator and the refund policy before buying. For sellers, Gumroad runs identity verification for payouts and reviews accounts against its terms, and it does not allow illegal goods, financial instruments, gambling or adult content.
Where Gumroad shines — and where it falls short
Strengths:
- Start selling in minutes with no monthly fee and no website needed.
- Handles checkout, file delivery, memberships, license keys and affiliates in one place.
- Merchant of record: global tax compliance for sales tax and VAT is included.
- Simple email marketing, affiliate tools and analytics, well suited to a solo business.
Trade-offs:
- High transaction fees compared with subscription platforms once revenue grows.
- The 30% Discover fee makes marketplace sales expensive.
- Limited design and store customization compared with a full website builder.
- Course and community features are basic next to dedicated course platforms, which matters if you sell a premium course.
- Payouts depend on your country; some countries have no payout method at all.
How Gumroad compares
- Payhip: a close Gumroad alternative with plans that lower or remove transaction fees for a monthly price.
- Podia: courses, digital downloads, email marketing and community for a monthly subscription.
- Kajabi: an all-in-one platform for course creators and coaches, with higher monthly fees and no transaction fees on its own payments.
- Shopify: a full online store for physical goods and digital products, with more tools and more setup.
- Stripe: payment links and checkout pages if you want to handle delivery and taxes yourself.
- Substack and Ghost: paid newsletters and memberships rather than product sales.
- Memberstack: memberships and gated content on your own website.
Is Gumroad worth it?
Gumroad is worth it for creators who want to sell products quickly, test ideas without upfront costs and let someone else handle payments, file delivery and tax compliance. For small or occasional sales, paying only per transaction is often cheaper than a monthly subscription. It is less of a fit once monthly revenue reaches thousands of dollars, when a subscription platform costs less, or when you need a fully branded store or a rich course experience.
