Pipedream is a code-friendly workflow automation platform connecting 3,000+ APIs, used by developers to automate tasks and power AI agents.
Overview
Pipedream review
This Pipedream review covers what the platform is used for, its key features, Pipedream pricing, Pipedream Connect for AI agents, where it shines and falls short, and how it compares with other tools. Pipedream is an integration platform and workflow orchestration platform for developers: you create automated workflows from triggers and steps, and every step can be a pre-built action or custom code in Node.js, Python, Go or Bash. Pipedream runs the code for you, so there is no infrastructure to manage and no servers to deploy. In November 2025 Workday signed an agreement to acquire Pipedream to connect its AI agents to third-party apps (Workday).
What is Pipedream used for?
Pipedream is used by developers and technical teams to connect APIs, move data between apps and run scripts on a schedule without managing servers. For example, common tasks are receiving a webhook, reshaping the data with a few lines of Python code and sending it to Slack, Google Sheets or a database; syncing records between SaaS tools; running a nightly job that calls several APIs; processing files; and adding third-party integrations to a product. Startups use it for connecting apps and services early, and larger companies use it to automate internal processes across many software tools. More and more teams use it as the integration layer for AI agents, where Pipedream Connect handles managed authentication and gives an agent access to thousands of pre-built tools.
Key features
- Event-driven workflows: triggers such as HTTP webhooks, schedules, email and app events start a workflow, and each step passes data and context to the next. Workflows scale automatically with the number of events.
- Custom code at every step: write custom code in Node.js, Python, Go or Bash, import any npm or PyPI package, and keep code-level control when a pre-built action is not enough.
- Pre-built components: 10,000+ pre-built tools, triggers and actions for 3,000+ integrated APIs, so common tasks need no code.
- Managed authentication: Pipedream stores OAuth tokens and API keys, refreshes them and injects them into your code, so you never handle raw credentials.
- Pipedream Connect and MCP: embed managed auth and tools in your own app or AI agent, through an SDK, a hosted connect link or MCP servers.
- Visual interface with code underneath: the workflow builder is visual, but every step is inspectable, testable and editable as code, with logs and monitoring of each event.
- GitHub sync: keep workflows in a Git repository on higher plans.
Pipedream pricing
Pipedream bills in credits. According to Pipedream's pricing docs, one credit is 30 seconds of compute time at 256 MB of memory; doubling the memory doubles the credits for the same run, and events from Pipedream's own sources are free. The plans below come from Automate Basics (third-party, September 2026), because Pipedream's pricing page only renders in a browser:
- Free: $0, 100 credits a month, 3 active workflows, 3 connected accounts.
- Basic: $29 a month billed annually ($45 monthly), 2,000 credits, 10 workflows, 5 connected accounts.
- Advanced: $49 a month billed annually ($74 monthly), unlimited workflows and accounts, premium apps and GitHub sync.
- Connect: $99 a month billed annually ($150 monthly), 10,000 credits, for apps and agents with end users.
- Business: custom pricing.
The cost surprise to check is compute time. A workflow that waits on a slow API or runs heavy Python burns credits for the whole run, and Connect adds a charge per unique end user on top of compute (Pipedream docs). Test a real workflow on the free plan and read the credit usage before you pick a paid plan.
How Pipedream workflows handle triggers, events and data
Every Pipedream workflow starts with a trigger. An event source watches an app, a webhook URL or a schedule and emits events; each event runs the workflow once, and the data it carries is available to every later step. Steps can be pre-built actions from the integrations library or code steps that read the previous step's data, call other services and return new data. Teams create workflows for automations such as lead routing, alerts, data syncs and AI processing, and can support branching, retries, delays and concurrency limits without writing that logic themselves. Workflows can also be triggered by an HTTP request from your own software, which makes Pipedream a lightweight API backend.
Pipedream Connect: managed auth for AI agents
Pipedream Connect is the product Pipedream now leads with. It gives developers managed auth for 3,000+ APIs, so an end user connects their Google, Slack or Salesforce account once and your app or AI agent can act on their behalf. Connect exposes the same pre-built tools through an SDK, a REST API and MCP servers, and it can proxy any API request for endpoints without a pre-built action. For teams building an AI agent builder or a SaaS product, this replaces months of OAuth work with a few lines of code: you simply describe which apps your customers need, and Pipedream handles the tokens, refresh and access control.
Custom code vs no-code: Pipedream, Zapier and n8n
Pipedream sits between no-code and code. Compared with Zapier, it gives developers full control over code, cheaper high-volume runs and native webhooks, while Zapier is easier for non-technical users. Compared with n8n, Pipedream is fully hosted and needs no infrastructure, while n8n can be self-hosted and has a more visual editor. Choose Pipedream when writing code is a feature, not a problem, and when you want support for triggers and events from many services without managing infrastructure.
Where Pipedream shines — and where it falls short
Strengths:
- Custom code in any step, with npm and PyPI packages and no servers to manage.
- Managed authentication for 3,000+ APIs, reusable in workflows and in your own product.
- A generous free plan for testing workflow automation.
- Strong fit for AI agents through Connect and MCP.
Trade-offs:
- Aimed at developers; non-technical teams will find Zapier or Make easier.
- No self-hosted option; your workflows run on Pipedream's cloud.
- Credit usage depends on compute time and memory, so costs are harder to predict for heavy workloads.
- Its roadmap now follows Workday's AI agent strategy, so check that the product direction fits you.
How Pipedream compares
- Zapier: the easiest no-code automation tool, with the biggest app library.
- Make: visual scenarios with branching and data mapping at a lower price per operation.
- n8n: open-source workflow automation that you can self-host, with code nodes.
- Microsoft Power Automate: automation inside Microsoft 365, plus desktop RPA.
- Workato and Tray.io: enterprise integration platforms with governance and support.
- Retool: internal tools and workflows on top of your databases and APIs.
Among these alternatives, Pipedream is the most code-first platform with managed auth; Zapier and Make are the easiest for teams without developers.
Is Pipedream worth it?
Pipedream is worth it for developers and technical teams who want to connect APIs and automate processes without running infrastructure, and for companies building integrations or AI agents that need managed auth. The free plan is enough to prove a workflow. It is less of a fit for non-technical users, for teams that must self-host, or for very long-running jobs where compute credits add up. If you want help to design or migrate automations, the automation agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can take it on.
