Enterprise workflow platform with App Engine for low-code apps and automation

Enterprise platforms · Low-code application platforms

ServiceNow is an enterprise AI platform for IT, HR and customer service workflows, with App Engine for building low-code business apps.

Overview

Service Now review

This ServiceNow review looks at the platform from a low-code angle: what ServiceNow is used for, its key features, how ServiceNow pricing and licensing work, App Engine and Flow Designer, where it shines and falls short, and the alternatives worth comparing. ServiceNow is best known as an ITSM platform for IT service management, but the same ServiceNow AI Platform also runs HR service delivery, customer service, security operations and custom applications on one data model. For a large enterprise, that unified platform is the point: every app, workflow and record lives next to the service management data that IT teams already use.

What is ServiceNow used for?

Most companies buy ServiceNow for IT service management: incidents, requests, change management, problem management, a knowledge base and a configuration management database (CMDB) that maps assets and services. From there, many teams extend it to HR service delivery, customer service management, field service, asset management, security operations, and strategic portfolio management.

The low-code side, App Engine, is used to build the workflows that fall between those products: onboarding requests, facilities and legal intake, audit and compliance tracking, procurement approvals and department-specific apps that used to live in spreadsheets and email. Because these apps run on the same platform, they reuse the same users, roles, approvals, service catalog and data, so an HR onboarding app can open IT tickets, order hardware and assign training without custom integrations. Business users describe the process, and professional developers step in for complex business logic.

Key features and AI capabilities

  • App Engine Studio: a guided environment where creators build applications with drag and drop tools, form editors, pre-built templates and sample apps (ServiceNow Community, November 2025).
  • Flow Designer: visual workflow automation for approvals, notifications, conditional logic and data actions, with reusable actions and subflows.
  • IntegrationHub spokes: pre-built connectors for Microsoft Teams, Slack, Jira, Salesforce and other systems, so teams connect data without writing custom API calls.
  • Now Assist for Creator: generative AI that turns a natural-language description into an app, forms and flows, and a code assistant that generates and explains scripts (ServiceNow Community prompting guide).
  • Virtual Agent: chatbots for routine tasks such as password resets, IT requests and HR questions.
  • Mobile Studio and Now Mobile: build mobile apps with drag-and-drop components; employees use the Now Mobile app to request services and find answers.
  • Governance: App Engine Management Center to enforce approvals, standards, testing, security roles and deployment policies for citizen developers.
  • Pro-code when needed: server and client scripts in JavaScript on ServiceNow's Glide APIs, scripted REST APIs and a full IDE for professional developers.

ServiceNow pricing

ServiceNow does not publish prices, and its pricing model depends on products, user types and business needs. Every product is quoted by sales, and there is no free plan for production use. App Engine is licensed per user per year with three user types: Creator for developers, Builder for citizen developers who configure flows and forms, and User for people who work in finished apps (Redress Compliance, a licensing advisor).

According to the same guide, the current App Engine tiers are Foundation, with 15 custom tables and 3 scoped apps, and Prime, with unlimited tables and apps plus advanced automation and AI; Prime typically costs 30–50% more per user. For ITSM, third-party guides report that ServiceNow moved to Foundation, Advanced and Prime tiers in April 2026, with Now Assist bundled into each ITSM seat. Earlier generative AI features required Pro Plus or Enterprise Plus add-ons.

Third-party figures give a sense of scale: SmartSuite, citing Vendr data, puts the median ServiceNow contract at about $130,080 a year, from about $45,000 to more than $500,000 (SmartSuite, written by a competitor). Featurebase estimates about $100 per user per month, also as a competitor.

The cost surprise to check is the custom table allowance and user typing. Tables are counted over the term, and apps that touch ITSM, HR or customer service data can need extra licensing. Putting too many people on Creator or Builder licenses is a common overspend; most people should be plain Users.

Core features of the ServiceNow ITSM platform

The core of ServiceNow is still its ITSM platform, and its key features start there. IT teams log incidents and requests in one place, route them by rules, and resolve routine tasks through a self-service portal and a knowledge base; every resolved ticket can feed a new knowledge base article. Knowledge management, change management and IT asset management share the same CMDB data, so an outage can be traced to the assets and services behind it. On the same platform, HR service delivery and customer service management bring the same digital workflows to employees and customers, which improves the customer experience when issues cross departments. For business users, the benefit is less manual work: approvals, status updates and simple requests run through workflow automation instead of email, which saves time for IT teams and for the business. Pre-built workflows for common customer issues and employee requests mean many companies automate workflows before they build any custom app. This is also why low-code on ServiceNow makes sense mainly for companies that already use it for service delivery.

ServiceNow App Engine and Flow Designer for low-code

App Engine is ServiceNow's low-code application development layer, and it uses the same business data as the ITSM platform. A creator starts in App Engine Studio, either from a template or by describing the app to Now Assist for Creator, which proposes tables, forms, roles and flows. Flow Designer then automates the process: a trigger such as a new record or a catalog request, followed by approvals, notifications, record updates and IntegrationHub actions. Non technical users can build simple apps with drag and drop tools and pre-built components; professional developers extend them with JavaScript, UI Builder pages and scripted APIs. Because every app runs on the Now Platform, it inherits single sign-on, access controls, auditing and mobile access.

The trade-off is scope. App Engine is strongest for workflows that touch other ServiceNow data. For a standalone customer-facing app or a small team without ServiceNow, general low-code platforms are faster and cheaper to start.

Where ServiceNow shines — and where it falls short

Strengths:

  • One platform for IT, HR, customer service and custom workflows, with shared business data and a CMDB.
  • Strong governance, security and audit trails for large enterprises.
  • Flow Designer and IntegrationHub automate workflows across many systems.
  • AI features for app generation, code assistance and virtual agents.
  • A large ecosystem of partners, certified developers, professional services and pre-built integrations.

Trade-offs:

  • No published pricing; contracts are quoted and often large.
  • A steep learning curve and a long initial setup, usually with a partner.
  • Too heavy for smaller companies and smaller teams.
  • Licensing rules for custom tables and user types need active management.
  • Some users report slow dashboards on large datasets and slow responses on low-priority support tickets (SmartSuite).

How ServiceNow compares

The best ServiceNow alternatives depend on whether you need a full ITSM platform or only low-code workflow automation. Most ServiceNow alternatives for IT service management, such as Jira Service Management, cover ticketing and a knowledge base but not the same range of business apps. These ServiceNow alternatives for low-code are listed on LowCodeDevs:

  • Pega: case management and decisioning for complex, regulated processes.
  • Appian: enterprise low-code process automation with data fabric and case management.
  • Mendix and OutSystems: full enterprise low-code platforms for standalone apps.
  • Microsoft Power Apps: low-code apps for companies on Microsoft 365.
  • Kissflow and Creatio: lighter workflow and CRM platforms for mid-sized companies.
  • Jira Automation: rule-based automation for teams already on Jira.
  • Retool: internal tools on top of your own databases and APIs.

Is ServiceNow worth it?

ServiceNow is worth it for large enterprises that already run IT, HR or customer service on the platform, or that need one governed system for workflows across many departments. In that setting, App Engine lets teams build apps on shared data with strong security and faster deployment than custom code. It is hard to justify for smaller teams, standalone apps or buyers who need predictable, published pricing; there, Power Apps, Kissflow or a general low-code platform is a better start. If you need help to design, license or build ServiceNow apps, the low-code agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can help you plan the work.
