Slack Workflow Builder
No-code tool inside Slack for automating messages, forms and approvals
Slack Workflow Builder is Slack's no-code tool for automating requests, forms, approvals and messages right inside your Slack workspace.
Overview
Slack Workflow Builder review
This Slack Workflow Builder review covers what it is used for, its key features, which Slack plans include it, how to build a workflow, where it shines and falls short, and how it compares with other tools. Workflow Builder lets any team member create workflows that run inside Slack: a trigger starts the workflow, and a series of workflow steps sends messages, collects answers through custom forms, asks for approvals or updates other tools. Everything is built with no code, in a visual editor, and most simple workflows take just a few minutes to set up. Because the workflow in Slack runs where your team already talks, people use it without learning a new app.
What is Slack Workflow Builder used for?
Teams use Slack workflows to automate everyday tasks and routine processes that would otherwise live in direct messages and spreadsheets. Common examples from Slack's help center and the wider SERP:
- Onboarding new employees: post a welcome message when a new member joins a channel, share links and a checklist, and remind the manager.
- Support requests and support tickets: a form in a designated channel collects the request, routes it to the right support team and tracks the status.
- Approvals: an expense request or time-off request goes to a manager, who approves or rejects it with a button.
- Incident response: a form captures incident details, posts them to a specific channel and pages the on-call team.
- Meetings and feedback: collect agenda topics before a weekly meeting, or ask for feedback after it.
- Status and reminders: set a Slack status or send Slack messages on a scheduled date.
The common thread is manual work that follows the same steps every time. Workflow Builder turns those routine tasks into a button or a form, which saves time and keeps teams aligned.
Key features
- Triggers: start a workflow from a link or button, on a schedule, when someone reacts with a specific emoji, when a member joins a channel, or when a channel is created (Slack Help Center). Connector triggers can also start workflows from events in third-party apps.
- Built-in steps: send a message to a channel or direct message, collect information with a form, ask for an approval, add a row to a Slack list, or update a canvas.
- Connector steps: more than 70 app connectors, including Salesforce, Google Sheets, Google Calendar, Jira and project management tools, run actions in other tools after you authenticate your account (Slack blog).
- Conditional logic: since August 2025, conditional branching sends a workflow down different paths based on a form answer, with up to 15 conditions and a second layer of up to 5.
- Custom steps: software developers can build their own steps with the Slack platform and make them available to everyone in the workspace.
- AI workflow generation and AI steps: describe a workflow in a sentence and Slack AI drafts it; AI steps summarise or classify text inside a workflow on higher plans.
- Limits: a workflow can have up to 100 steps, and the activity log can be viewed but not exported (Workflow Builder FAQ).
Slack Workflow Builder pricing
Workflow Builder has no separate price: it comes with your Slack plan. The figures below come from Slack's pricing page as shown in euros from Europe in September 2026; US prices differ.
- Free: €0. The pricing page lists Workflow Builder and AI workflow generation, but Slack's help article on free-plan limits says free workspaces cannot create or run workflows (Slack Help Center). Check this in your own workspace before you plan around it.
- Pro: €6.75 per user per month billed annually, €8.25 monthly. Workflow Builder with conditional branching.
- Business+: €15 per user per month billed annually, €18 monthly. Adds AI workflow generation and AI steps in Workflow Builder.
- Enterprise+: from €45 per user per month billed annually, through sales. Adds enterprise AI, search and governance.
The cost surprise to check is that Workflow Builder is priced per Slack user, not per workflow run. That makes it cheap for a team already paying for Slack, but if you downgrade to Free, existing workflows stop working. Connector steps may also need a paid plan in the other tool, such as Salesforce or Jira.
How to build a workflow in Slack
To build a workflow, open Slack, select Workflow Builder from the tools menu, and choose a template or create from scratch. Pick the trigger first, for example a link in a channel or an emoji reaction. Then add workflow steps: a form to collect information, a message to a private channel, a connector step that adds a row to Google Sheets. Use variables to pass answers from one step to the next, add conditional logic if different answers need different paths, and publish. Your first workflow can be live in just a few clicks; complex workflows with many branches take longer to design and test.
Before you publish, only you and any workflow managers you add can see the workflow. Admins can restrict who creates workflows and which connectors are allowed.
Slack Workflow Builder vs Zapier and other tools
Workflow Builder is best for processes that start and end in Slack: requests, approvals and team rituals. For automations that run between other apps without a person in Slack, a dedicated automation tool fits better. Zapier and Make connect thousands of apps and run in the background; Zapier can also trigger Slack workflows from events in any app. For teams on Microsoft 365, Microsoft Power Automate plays the same role around Teams and Outlook. Workflow Builder does not keep data in sync in both directions between tools, and it has no database of its own beyond Slack lists.
Where Slack Workflow Builder shines — and where it falls short
Strengths:
- No code and no extra app: workflows run where the team already works.
- Included in paid Slack plans, with no per-run fees.
- Good templates for onboarding, requests, approvals and incident response.
- Conditional branching and 70+ connectors cover most team processes.
Trade-offs:
- Not available on the Free plan, according to Slack's help center.
- Works best when a person starts the workflow in Slack; background automation across tools is limited.
- Large workflows with many branches become hard to maintain.
- Limited reporting: the activity log cannot be exported.
How Slack Workflow Builder compares
- Zapier: app-to-app automation across thousands of tools, with Slack as one of many.
- Make: visual scenarios with more complex data handling.
- n8n: self-hostable automation for technical teams.
- Microsoft Power Automate: the Microsoft 365 and Teams equivalent.
- Jira Automation: rule-based automation inside Jira for project management teams.
- IFTTT: simple personal and smart-home automations.
Is Slack Workflow Builder worth it?
Slack Workflow Builder is worth it for any team on a paid Slack plan that handles requests, approvals and recurring messages in Slack today. It is included in the plan, needs no code, and boosts efficiency with little setup. It is less of a fit for background automation between other apps, for teams on the Free plan, or for processes that need reporting or two-way sync; there, Zapier, Make or n8n do more. If you want help to automate complex processes around Slack, low-code agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can build them.

Questions
Slack Workflow Builder FAQ
Can I use Workflow Builder in Slack for free?
Slack's help center says free workspaces cannot create or run workflows, and existing workflows stop when you downgrade. Workflow Builder is included in paid plans from Pro upward.
How does Slack Workflow Builder work?
A trigger, such as a link, a schedule, an emoji reaction or a new channel member, starts the workflow. Steps then send messages, collect answers in forms, ask for approvals or update connected tools.
Can Slack messages be automated?
Yes. Workflow Builder can send Slack messages to a channel or direct message on a schedule, when a member joins a channel, or as a step in any workflow.
How do I automate in Slack?
Open Workflow Builder, pick a template or start from scratch, choose a trigger and add steps. For automation between other apps, connect Slack to Zapier, Make or n8n.
Can I automate my Slack out-of-office status every day?
Yes. A scheduled workflow can remind you or set a status on a daily schedule, and Zapier offers templates that set a Slack status automatically.
Does Slack Workflow Builder support conditional logic?
Yes. Since August 2025 workflows can branch on form answers, with up to 15 conditions and a second layer of up to 5.
