Betty Blocks

Enterprise no-code and low-code platform for building business applications

App builders · Mobile apps

Betty Blocks is a Dutch no-code platform where business users and IT teams build governed web applications, portals and internal tools.

Overview

Betty Blocks review

This Betty Blocks review covers what the platform is used for, its key features, pricing, code ownership and hosting, where it shines and falls short, and how it compares with the alternatives on the market. Betty Blocks is a Dutch software company from Alkmaar, founded by Chris and Tim Obdam. Betty Blocks offers an application development platform where business teams and IT build software visually: you model data, design pages from pre-built components and describe logic as actions, and the platform runs the result. Since 2025 it adds Betty Genius, which turns a plain-language prompt into a first working application. The company now positions itself as a sovereign AI application generation platform for enterprises that want speed without giving up governance or ownership of what they build.

What is Betty Blocks used for?

Betty Blocks is used for internal applications, customer and partner portals, and workflow automation in larger organizations. Examples of use cases are case and claims handling in insurance and financial services, intake and matter management for legal teams, HR onboarding, inspections and approvals, and portals that extend an existing ERP or CRM without touching the core system. Most are business processes that are too specific for standard software but too small for a full development project. Its own use-case page also names legacy modernization: rebuilding parts of an old system piece by piece without downtime (Betty Blocks use cases).

The platform is built around citizen development. Business teams in different departments build their own tools, while IT keeps control over data, security and deployment. Developers extend the platform with custom blocks and TypeScript, so citizen developers and IT work in the same environment rather than in shadow IT. This makes it suitable for fusion teams, where business and IT share one stack.

Key features

  • Visual builder: a page builder with pre-built and reusable components you can customize, a data model editor and an action builder for business logic and workflows, all in the browser.
  • Betty Genius: describe the application in natural language and get a structured first version to refine, plus AI agents and chatbots inside applications.
  • Bring your own AI models: connect AI models through MCP, the open protocol, so you can switch providers without rebuilding (Betty Blocks Open).
  • Code ownership: applications compile to standard React on the front end and a WebAssembly back end, which you can export and run elsewhere.
  • Hosting choice: cloud, private cloud, on-premises or hybrid, which matters for digital sovereignty in the EU.
  • Governance: role-based permissions, separate environments, approval flows and a Block Store of reusable blocks and templates.
  • Integration: REST and connector-based integration to integrate ERP, CRM, databases and other services, plus embedded pages inside other software.

Betty Blocks pricing

Betty Blocks charges a platform fee per month instead of per user. The plans below come from the Betty Blocks pricing page as of September 2026.

  • Create: €1,500 a month. Unlimited builders and unlimited internal, external and anonymous app users, a small application bundle, 10 GB of file storage, business-hours support. Onboarding costs €7,500 once.
  • Scale: €3,500 a month. Adds a developer sandbox, multiple MCP servers, the Block Store and master templates, 25 GB of storage and onboarding included.
  • Enterprise: custom price. Adds enterprise governance, flexible LLMs, on-premises hosting, a large application bundle, extended support and a technical account manager.

There is also an Ideation tier for AI prototyping without a published price. There is no free plan; you book a demo instead. The usage metric is development, not consumption: Betty Blocks calls it a "no-license guarantee", so adding users does not raise the bill.

The cost surprise to check is the application bundle and the onboarding fee. The page does not say how many applications a small or large bundle includes, so ask before you plan a portfolio. Older third-party reviews, including Bubble's review, describe tiered pricing by the number of "blocks" and a 3-year contract; the current pricing page shows flat monthly platform fees instead, so check the contract term in your own quote.

Code ownership, security and digital sovereignty

Vendor lock-in is the main worry with any low code platform, because the architecture of your apps usually belongs to the vendor. Betty Blocks answers it with exportable code: a React front end and a WebAssembly back end, with TypeScript for custom logic today. You can host applications where your compliance team requires, including on-premises on the Enterprise plan. For European public sector, finance and legal customers, this ownership and access to their own infrastructure is often the deciding factor for the future of their application portfolio. On security, the company reports ISO 27001 certification since 2017 and a SOC 2 Type 2 attestation. Check which plan includes code export and what still depends on Betty Blocks after export; the vendor pages do not spell that out.

Where Betty Blocks shines — and where it falls short

Strengths:

  • Built for enterprises: AI governance, environments and role-based permissions from the start.
  • Pricing by platform, not per user, so portals with many external users stay affordable.
  • Code export and hosting choice reduce vendor lock-in.
  • One environment for citizen developers and IT, with AI to speed up development.

Trade-offs:

  • The entry price of €1,500 a month plus onboarding rules out small teams and side projects.
  • No free plan or self-serve trial to test the platform alone.
  • Front-end design freedom is narrower than in consumer-focused builders.
  • A smaller partner ecosystem, support community and blog knowledge base than Mendix or OutSystems.

How Betty Blocks compares

  • Mendix: enterprise low code with a large ecosystem, priced per application and user.
  • OutSystems: high-performance low code for professional developers.
  • Microsoft Power Apps: the Microsoft 365 option, strong when your data lives in Dataverse and SharePoint.
  • Appian: process automation and case management with low code.
  • Oracle APEX: data-centric applications on top of Oracle Database.
  • Retool: internal tools for developers on databases and APIs.
  • Bubble: web applications and SaaS products for startups rather than enterprise IT.

Is Betty Blocks worth it?

Betty Blocks is worth it for mid-sized and large organizations, especially in Europe, that want business teams to build governed applications and portals, care about data sovereignty and want to avoid per-user license costs. The flat platform fee pays off once several apps and many people run on it, and code export protects the investment in the future. It is harder to justify for a single small application, for startups, or for teams that want to try a tool alone before talking to sales.
