Overview

Lovable review

This Lovable review covers what Lovable is used for, how Lovable works, its key features, Lovable pricing and credits, code ownership, where it shines and falls short, and the Lovable alternatives worth a look. You describe an idea in plain language, and Lovable generates a working web app: a React front end styled with Tailwind CSS, a database, user login and hosting. You then refine it by chatting, by editing the layout visually, or by writing code yourself. Lovable was founded in 2023 in Stockholm by Anton Osika, its CEO, and Fabian Hedin, and grew out of the open-source GPT Engineer project.

What is Lovable used for?

Lovable is used to build web applications and websites without writing code from scratch. Typical projects are MVPs and SaaS products, internal tools and dashboards, client portals, landing pages with a signup flow, and prototypes that need real data behind them. Founders use it to test an idea with real users in days. Product managers and designers use it to turn a concept into a clickable, working prototype. Developers use it to create the first version of an app and then maintain it in their own development environment. Small teams also use it to build tools that track leads, orders or support requests.

Lovable lowers the need for technical knowledge, but it does not remove it. A simple app with a database, authentication and a few screens is realistic for a non-developer. Complex logic, payments, permissions and integrations still take time to test and fix, and many teams bring in a developer before launch.

How Lovable works

  1. Describe the app in a prompt: who uses it, what data it stores, which screens it needs.
  2. Lovable generates the code, the database tables and the pages, and shows a live preview.
  3. Refine it in chat, or use Plan mode to agree on an approach before any code changes.
  4. Edit text, colors and layout directly with the visual editor.
  5. Connect GitHub to sync the code, or complete the deployment to a lovable.app subdomain or your own domain in one click.

Key features

  • Prompt-based code generation: Lovable generates real code, not a locked visual model. The stack is React, TypeScript, Vite and Tailwind CSS.
  • Lovable Cloud backend: a built-in backend, enabled by default, with a Postgres database, authentication, file storage and edge functions, built on Supabase's open-source foundation. You can also connect a Supabase project you own (Lovable docs).
  • GitHub two-way sync: edits in Lovable appear in your repository and changes in GitHub sync back, so developers can work in their own IDE.
  • Visual editing: change text, spacing and styles on the page without a prompt, which saves credits.
  • Plan mode and chat: discuss the next step and let Lovable propose a plan before it builds.
  • AI features in your app: create chatbots, summaries and other AI features in the apps you build through Lovable's AI gateway, billed per model and token.
  • Collaboration: workspaces support unlimited users on every plan, with team permissions and access control on Business.
  • Integrations: Stripe and other services through prompts, plus any API your app can call, so you can build apps with payments and automated workflows.

Lovable pricing: free plan, paid plans and credits

Lovable prices by credits, not seats. The plan details below come from Lovable's pricing page and credits documentation as of September 2026.

  • Free plan: $0. 5 build credits a day, capped at 30 a month, plus a monthly grant of 20 Cloud credits and 4 AI credits.
  • Pro: $25 a month, or $21 a month billed annually, with 100 monthly credits on top of the 5 daily build credits.
  • Business: $50 a month, or $42 billed annually, with the same credits plus single sign-on, a data-training opt-out and team permissions.
  • Enterprise: custom pricing.

The monthly credit amounts and plan prices come from Lovable's pricing page as summarized by No Code MBA and eesel AI, because the page renders its plan table in a script. Extra credits cost $0.30 each on Pro and $0.60 on Business, sold in $15 to $150 top-ups that last 12 months. Monthly plan credits roll over and expire two months after they are issued.

Credit usage depends on the task. In Build mode a small edit costs about 0.5 credits, adding authentication about 1.2, and a large change with images about 2. A Plan mode message costs 1 credit. Deployed apps also draw from the same balance for Cloud hosting and AI calls, although Lovable says hosting a small or new app usually costs nothing.

The cost surprise to check: when the balance reaches zero, building stops, AI features in your deployed app fail and the backend pauses until you top up. Budget for the app you run, not only for the app you build.

How to use fewer Lovable credits

Credit usage is the main cost driver, so how you work matters more than which of the paid plans you pick. These habits keep usage down:

  • Plan first. One Plan mode message costs 1 credit and avoids several failed build attempts.
  • Write specific prompts. Describe one screen, one table or one workflow per prompt instead of the whole app at once.
  • Use the visual editor for text, colors and layout changes; they do not need an AI prompt.
  • Fix bugs with context. Paste the error and say which page it appears on, so Lovable does not rewrite working code.
  • Use the free daily credits for small tasks before you draw from the monthly balance.
  • Move heavy editing to your own development environment through GitHub when the app grows, and keep deployment and hosting on Lovable if that suits you.

Code ownership and platform lock-in

You own the code and the projects you build with Lovable, according to its pricing FAQ. Because GitHub sync is two-way, you can export the whole codebase, edit it anywhere and host it yourself, so platform lock-in is lower than with visual no-code tools. Some features, such as authentication emails from your own domain and built-in payments, work best on Lovable Cloud, so moving off Lovable can mean rebuilding those parts on your own backend.

Can Lovable build mobile apps?

Lovable builds web apps and websites that also work on phones, including progressive web apps. It does not generate native iOS or Android apps. For store-ready mobile apps, a mobile-first builder is the better fit.

Lovable vs Bolt and Replit

Bolt and Replit are the tools most often compared with Lovable. Bolt also turns prompts into web apps in the browser, prices by tokens and leaves more of the backend setup to you. Replit is a full cloud development environment with many languages, its own AI agent and built-in deployment, which suits developers who want more control over the code and infrastructure. Lovable is the most guided of the three: it creates the front end, the backend infrastructure and user login in one flow, which makes it accessible for non-developers building apps for the first time.

Where Lovable shines — and where it falls short

Strengths:

  • Very fast from idea to a working web app with a database and user login.
  • Real, readable code with GitHub sync and code ownership.
  • No per-seat fees; unlimited members in a workspace.
  • A full backend built in, with access control and the option to bring your own Supabase.

Trade-offs:

  • Credits are hard to predict; complex prompts and fixing loops use them up quickly, a complaint that comes up often in the Lovable community.
  • Complex logic, permissions and security still need testing by someone who reads code.
  • React and TypeScript only; no native mobile output.
  • A deployed app pauses when credits run out.

How Lovable compares

  • Bubble: a visual no-code platform with its own database and native mobile builds; more control, no code export.
  • FlutterFlow: a visual builder for native mobile and web apps with Flutter code export.
  • Softr: client portals and internal tools on top of Airtable, Google Sheets or databases.
  • Glide and Adalo: simpler app builders for internal and mobile apps.
  • Webflow and Framer: visual website builders when you need a marketing site rather than an app.
  • Supabase: the Postgres backend Lovable uses; pick it directly when a developer builds the front end.
  • Builder.io: visual editing and AI design-to-code on top of your own codebase.

v0 and Base44 are other AI app builders worth a test, and both are covered in Lovable's own comparison guides.

Is Lovable worth it?

Lovable is worth it for founders, designers and small teams who want a working web app or SaaS prototype fast and value owning the code. The free plan is enough to test the idea, and the Pro plan covers most early projects. It is less of a fit for native mobile apps, for complex products with strict compliance requirements, or for teams that need predictable costs at scale. In those cases a developer, or a visual platform with fixed pricing, may be the better choice. If you want help to take a Lovable prototype to production, review its security or move the code to your own stack, the low-code agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can help.
