Runway
AI video generation platform for creatives, marketers and developers
Runway is an AI platform that turns text prompts and images into video, images and audio for creators, marketers and developers.
Overview
Runway review
This Runway ML review covers what Runway is used for, its key features, Runway pricing and credits, the API, where it shines and falls short, and how it compares with other tools. It is a browser-based platform for flexible video generation: you describe a scene in a text prompt or start from a reference image, choose a model and its settings, and it will generate video clips, images or audio. The company now calls its web product Runway Creative, runs an API called Runway Dev, and says more than 60 million creatives use its tools (Runway). The old runwayml.com address now redirects to runway.com, so "RunwayML" and "Runway AI" are the same product.
What is Runway used for?
The platform is used to generate video from a text prompt or an image, and to edit or extend existing footage with AI. Typical work is short video ads and social content, concept and mood films, animated and VFX content, product shots, storyboards and pre-visualization for live action. Marketers use it to test creative directions quickly: one idea becomes several short clips with different subjects, environments, scene settings and camera motion. Filmmakers and designers use it for shots that would be expensive to film, and agencies use it to iterate on a video ad before a real production. Developers use the API to add video generation to their own product workflow.
Key features
- Video generation models: Gen-4.5, the current flagship model, plus the Gen-4 model and the faster, cheaper Gen-4 Turbo model. You generate video from a text prompt, an image, or both, and each model trades quality against credits and speed.
- Consistency with references: Gen-4 keeps characters, objects and locations consistent across shots from reference images, preserving the look and composition of a scene across angles, which the company calls world consistency (Runway research).
- Image generation: the Gen-4 Image model creates stills from a text prompt and references, useful for a first frame, a product shot or a set of objects in a new scene.
- Controllable motion and editing: camera settings, extending clips, editing footage with models such as Aleph, and Act-Two, which transfers a performer's motion and expression to an animated character.
- Audio and voice: custom voice clones on paid plans for narration.
- Upscaling and export: 4K upscaling on paid plans, and studio-grade exports (HDR, ProRes, image sequences) on Max.
- API: Runway Dev gives developers the same models through an API, billed per credit.
- World models: Runway also builds general world models for interactive worlds and robotics, sold separately from the creative plans.
Runway pricing
Runway charges a monthly subscription that includes credits; every generation uses credits. The plans below come from the Runway pricing page as of September 2026.
- Free: $0. 125 one-time credits to test the tools, 5 GB of storage, watermarked output, no 4K upscaling.
- Standard: $12 per user per month billed annually ($15 monthly). 625 credits a month, which buys about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 or 104 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo. No watermark, 4K upscaling, 20 GB, up to 3 projects.
- Pro: $28 per user per month billed annually ($35 monthly). 2,250 credits a month (about 187 seconds of Gen-4.5), 100 GB, 1 brand kit, 1 custom voice clone.
- Max: $76 per user per month billed annually ($95 monthly). 9,500 credits a month, 500 GB, studio-grade 4K exports, up to 3 brand kits and voice clones.
- Enterprise: custom pricing through sales.
The cost surprise to check is credit consumption. Credits do not roll over on Standard and Pro: they reset each billing month, and only Max rolls over up to one month of unused credits. A short clip uses credits per second, and you usually generate several takes before one works, so a Standard plan covers under a minute of Gen-4.5 video a month. Test your prompts on Gen-4 Turbo, which costs less than half as much per second, before you render the final shot on Gen-4.5.
Video generation credits and the Runway API
In the web app, each model uses credits per second of video or per image. On the Runway API, one credit costs $0.01. Gen-4.5 uses 12 credits per second, Gen-4 Turbo and Act-Two 5 credits per second, Aleph 28 credits per second with a 56-credit minimum, and a 1080p Gen-4 image 8 credits. A ten-second Gen-4.5 clip through the API therefore costs about $1.20 before retries. The API suits teams that want to generate video inside their own app or content workflow at scale, for example a template-based video ad for every product in a catalog.
Getting started with image generation and video generation
Step 1: sign up on the free plan, open a new project and explore the models. Write a text prompt that describes the subject, the scene, the environment, the camera motion and the style, or upload an image as the first frame so the model keeps its objects and composition. Step 2: generate a few variations on a cheaper model and adjust the settings, such as duration, aspect ratio and camera motion. Step 3: pick the best result, then extend it, upscale it or render the final version on Gen-4.5. Download the clip without a watermark once you are on a paid plan. Keep prompts simple and specific: one subject, one action and one camera move per clip gives more controllable output than a long description.
Where Runway shines — and where it falls short
Strengths:
- High-quality AI video generation from text or images in the browser, with no installation.
- Consistent characters and objects across shots with reference images.
- Fast iteration for ads, concepts and social content.
- A public API for developers, priced per credit, so a content workflow can scale beyond the web app.
Trade-offs:
- Clips are short, so longer videos need several generations and editing.
- Credits run out fast, and retries cost the same as keepers.
- Results depend on the prompt and the model; motion artifacts, odd physics and objects that change between frames still happen.
- The free plan is only a one-time trial with watermarks.
How Runway compares
- Canva: templates and quick AI video for marketing teams, with far less control over generation.
- Bannerbear and Placid: template-based image and video automation through an API, not generative video.
- Teachable Machine and Create ML: train your own models on your own data, not generate media.
Google Veo, OpenAI Sora, Kling, Pika and Luma are the closest generative video competitors; they have no tool pages on LowCodeDevs yet.
Is Runway worth it?
It is worth it for creators, marketers and agencies who need AI video generation often and want control over motion, consistency and style. The Standard plan is enough to learn the platform, and Pro or Max makes sense once you produce video every week. It is less of a fit for long-form video, for tight budgets where credits run out, or for teams that only need template videos. If you want help building a video generation workflow on Runway or wiring its API into your product, the AI agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can take it on.

Is Runway free?
Runway has a free plan with 125 one-time credits, 5 GB of storage and watermarked output. It is a trial, not an ongoing free allowance.
What is Runway AI used for?
Runway is used to generate video and images from text prompts or images: video ads, social content, concept films, VFX shots and storyboards.
How much does the Runway API cost?
The Runway API charges $0.01 per credit. Gen-4.5 uses 12 credits per second of video and Gen-4 Turbo 5 credits per second.
Is RunwayML the same as Runway AI?
Yes. RunwayML was the original name and domain; runwayml.com now redirects to runway.com, and the company is Runway AI, Inc.
Is Runway worth the money?
Yes for creators and teams who generate AI video every week and want control over style and motion. Less so for occasional use, long videos or tight budgets, because credits reset each month.
