Overview

Chatfuel review

This Chatfuel review covers what Chatfuel is used for, its key features, Chatfuel pricing and AI limits, how it compares with ManyChat and other tools, and where it shines and falls short. Chatfuel launched in 2015 as one of the first Facebook Messenger chatbot builders and went through Y Combinator in 2016 (TechCrunch). Today it is an AI powered chatbot platform focused on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook: an AI agent answers messages, qualifies leads and books calls, while a visual flow builder handles the fixed parts of a conversation. Chatfuel says more than 150,000 businesses run on the platform.

What is Chatfuel used for?

Chatfuel is used to create chatbots that turn chat conversations into leads and sales without coding. Typical examples:

  • Answering questions on WhatsApp and Instagram DMs around the clock, with an AI agent trained on your own business details.
  • Replying to Instagram comments and story mentions with an auto reply that opens a DM.
  • Running click-to-WhatsApp and click-to-Messenger ads, then qualifying the prospects that come in.
  • Booking appointments, for example through the Calendly integration.
  • Collecting information such as email, phone number and budget into custom fields, then passing the data to a CRM.
  • Customer service on Facebook Messenger: answering order questions, returns and opening hours so customers can talk to the business at any time.

Marketers, marketing agencies and e-commerce teams are the core Chatfuel users. Chatfuel offers an agency plan to manage chatbots for several companies, and its current positioning is a "System for Automated Leads" that shows which lead became a sale.

Key features

Chatfuel's features cover the whole chatbot, from the first message to the CRM:

  • AI agent: a GPT-based assistant that answers, classifies incoming messages and qualifies leads in natural language, with text, voice and image messages.
  • Flow builder: a drag-and-drop interface for fixed flows, with buttons, conditions, custom fields and logic, so you control what the chatbot says at key steps.
  • Broadcasts and sequences: send messages to segments of contacts and schedule a follow-up sequence, within Meta's messaging rules. Marketing automation like this is where Chatfuel started on Facebook Messenger.
  • Entry points: comment auto reply, story replies and mentions, ad clicks, links, QR codes and a WhatsApp chat button for your website.
  • Live chat and dashboard: a shared inbox and dashboard where a human can take over the conversation from the chatbot and see analytics.
  • Integrations: Chatfuel lists 136 native integrations, including HubSpot and Salesforce, and connects to Google Sheets, Calendly, Shopify, Zapier and Make, plus an API and webhooks.
  • Templates: ready-made flows for lead generation, booking and e-commerce to create a first chatbot quickly.

Chatfuel pricing

The Chatfuel pricing page lists these plans as of September 2026:

  • Business: $20 a month billed monthly, or $18 a month billed yearly ($216 a year). Includes $20 of AI credits a month.
  • Agency S: $90 a month billed monthly, or $1,080 a year. Includes $100 of AI credits a month and covers 3 client companies.
  • Enterprise plan: custom pricing through sales, for larger companies that need more AI capacity and support.

There is a free trial but no free plan for live chatbots, so every live chatbot needs a paid plan. The usage metric is AI processing, not contacts or messages: according to Chatfuel's usage limits page, "your plan covers unlimited active contacts and unlimited messages, but the AI processing behind each reply has a fair use allowance per billing period". Keyword replies and broadcasts do not use the allowance; AI replies, message classification and AI automations do.

The cost surprise to check is what happens at the limit: the bot pauses until you renew, wait for the next billing period or connect your own OpenAI API key. On WhatsApp, Meta also charges its own fees for template messages, separate from the Chatfuel plan. Check how busy your AI agent will be before you pick a plan.

Older reviews quote per-channel prices, 1,000-conversation limits or contact-based tiers. Chatfuel's current pricing and limits pages show one plan per business with unlimited active contacts, so those figures are out of date.

Chatfuel vs ManyChat

ManyChat is the closest competitor and the question most people ask. Both are no-code chatbot builders for Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger with a flow builder, broadcasts and AI. ManyChat has the larger creator community and is strongest on Instagram automation for creators and online shops. Chatfuel puts more weight on WhatsApp, AI lead qualification and agencies that run bots for clients, and it prices by AI usage instead of by contacts. If most of your leads arrive on WhatsApp or you manage several clients, Chatfuel is the better fit; for Instagram-first creators, ManyChat is usually the easier choice.

Chatfuel on Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp

Chatfuel's features differ a little per channel, because each follows Meta's own rules. On Facebook Messenger, where Chatfuel started, users interact with the chatbot through buttons, quick replies and a follow-up sequence, and you can send broadcasts to contacts who opted in. On Instagram the chatbot lives in DMs: comment and story entry points start a conversation, which makes Instagram the main channel for creators and online shops that sell through posts. On WhatsApp the chatbot answers in the same conversation as your sales team, and messages outside the 24-hour customer service window need approved templates. One Chatfuel account can connect all three channels.

Getting started: the Chatfuel flow builder and AI agent

Sign up, start the free trial and connect a channel: a WhatsApp Business number, an Instagram professional account or a Facebook page. Create the AI agent by describing your business, products, prices and booking link, then test the conversation in the preview. Expect to refine its answers during the first week, as real users ask questions you did not plan for. Add a flow for the parts you want to control, such as collecting a phone number, and set up an entry point like a comment auto reply or an ad. Connect Google Sheets, the API or your CRM so new contacts land where your sales team works. Chatfuel users with a free trial can test all the features before they pick a paid plan. Setup for a first chatbot takes a few hours, not weeks.

Where Chatfuel shines — and where it falls short

Strengths:

  • Fast setup of an AI chatbot on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger without coding, thanks to the simplicity of the interface.
  • Unlimited contacts and messages, with AI usage as the only metered part.
  • Agency plan for managing chatbots for several companies.
  • Strong tools to generate leads and sell: comment triggers, templates and integrations.

Trade-offs:

  • Focused on Meta channels; no native chat widget beyond the WhatsApp button, and no Telegram, SMS or email.
  • The chatbot pauses when the AI allowance runs out.
  • Flow builder logic gets complex for large chatbots, and flows are hard to reuse across channels.
  • Meta's WhatsApp fees add to the monthly cost.

How Chatfuel compares

  • Landbot: conversational forms and bots for websites and WhatsApp.
  • Voiceflow: a platform for designing AI agents across many channels, aimed at product teams.
  • ChatBot: AI chatbots for website and customer support, from the LiveChat company.
  • Flow XO: a simple multi-channel bot builder including Telegram and websites.
  • Intercom: customer support suite with an AI agent, priced for larger support teams.
  • Crisp: shared inbox and website chat with chatbot features for small teams.
  • Octane AI: quizzes and conversational marketing for Shopify stores.

Is Chatfuel worth it?

Chatfuel is worth it for businesses and agencies that get most conversations through WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger and want an AI chatbot to answer and qualify them. At $20 a month the entry price is low, and unlimited contacts keep costs predictable as the audience grows. It is less of a fit if you need a website chat widget, channels outside Meta, custom branding of the chat window, or very heavy AI use, where the fair use allowance becomes the limit. Compare Chatfuel pricing with the Chatfuel alternatives above before you commit. If you want help to build a Chatfuel chatbot or connect it to your CRM, the Chatfuel agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can take it on.
