AI product quiz and zero-party data platform for Shopify stores

AI & agents · Chatbots & assistants

Octane AI is a Shopify app for AI product recommendation quizzes, pop-ups and opt-ins that collect zero-party data for ecommerce brands.

Overview

Octane AI review

This Octane AI review covers what the app does, its AI features, Octane AI pricing and credits, where it shines and falls short, and how it compares with other quiz tools. The app lets merchants create AI-powered quizzes: a product quiz asks shoppers a few questions and shows a results page with matching products. The answers become zero-party data that syncs to Klaviyo and Shopify, so email and SMS flows can personalize on what customers told you. It is Shopify-only and says more than 5,000 Shopify stores use it, including Jones Road Beauty, ILIA and Rhode (Octane AI).

What is Octane AI used for?

Octane is used to guide shoppers to the right product when a catalog is large or personal: skincare, beauty, supplements, coffee, pet food, apparel sizing. A "find your routine" or "which shade are you" quiz replaces browsing, and the results page recommends products with an add-to-cart button. At the same time the quiz grows the email and SMS list, because shoppers opt in to get their quiz results in their inbox.

The second use is personalization after the quiz, with personalized quizzes that change questions and products to the specific needs of each customer. Each answer is stored as a customer property, so merchants can segment in Klaviyo by skin type, goal or budget and send flows that match. The company started in 2016 as a Facebook Messenger marketing tool and later moved to Shopify quizzes; it was founded by Matt Schlicht, Ben Parr and Leif K-Brooks.

Key features

  • Quiz builder: product recommendation quizzes, single-product quizzes and gift finders, with templates and a results page you can customize.
  • AI-assisted creation: AI quizzes are generated from your product catalog, and CORE-1, Octane's AI engine, learns the catalog and interprets answers in context.
  • Smart Products: AI picks the matching products in real time instead of hand-written logic for every answer.
  • Smart Copy: AI writes personalized copy on the quiz results page.
  • Image Analyzer: photo-based matching, such as finding a foundation shade from a selfie.
  • Pop-ups and opt-ins: quiz pop-ups, email and SMS capture forms, and a "get results in your inbox" step.
  • Smart properties: every answer syncs to the customer profile for segmentation.
  • Integrations: 50+ tools, including Klaviyo, Shopify, Attentive, Recharge for subscriptions, Gorgias for support, Yotpo and Google Analytics (Attentive help).
  • Analytics and A/B testing: quiz results, conversion rates and revenue per quiz, with A/B testing on Plus and higher.

Octane AI pricing

Octane AI charges by credits. The prices below come from the Octane AI pricing page as of September 2026; every plan has a 14-day free trial and there is no free plan.

  • Basic: $50 a month, or $43 a month billed annually. 400 credits, two quizzes, pop-ups and opt-ins, Klaviyo and Shopify sync, AI features and analytics.
  • Plus: $200 a month, or $170 billed annually. 2,200 credits, unlimited quizzes, A/B testing and custom CSS.
  • Enterprise & Unlimited: from $500 a month, or $425 billed annually. 7,250+ credits or unlimited, a dedicated account manager, quiz optimization, email flow blueprints, custom onboarding and monthly strategy calls.

Quiz engagements and AI usage both draw on the credits included in your plan. A credit is one quiz engagement, which Octane counts when someone completes your quiz. AI usage costs extra credits: Smart Products about 0.3 credits, Smart Copy about 0.1 and Image Analyzer about 0.2 per use. Unused credits roll over for 30 days, and you can upgrade or downgrade at any time.

The cost surprise to check is overage credits. When the included credits run out, the quiz keeps working and extra credits are billed at $0.10 each at the end of the billing cycle, so a busy month can cost more than the plan price. A popular quiz with AI features on can use far more credits than completions suggest. Each plan also has higher credit tiers; a competitor's comparison lists Basic at $100 for 900 credits and Unlimited from $2,000 a month (Lantern).

Feature comparison: Basic, Plus and Enterprise

  • Basic: two AI quizzes, pop-ups, Klaviyo and Shopify sync, analytics and access to every AI feature.
  • Plus: unlimited quizzes, A/B testing, custom CSS, advanced logic and branding removal, for a growing business with a team that runs several quizzes.
  • Enterprise: more credits or unlimited usage, an account manager, and support to plan and scale quiz programs.

AI quizzes and product recommendation quizzes on Shopify

A product quiz works best when shoppers struggle to choose. Keep it to five to eight questions, ask about needs rather than products, and put the email opt-in before the results page. The app maps answers to products with Smart Products or with rules you set; advanced logic for branching paths is on Plus and higher. As a Shopify app, it installs from the Shopify App Store, reads your catalog directly and adds recommended products to the cart without extra setup. Stores on other platforms need a different quiz tool.

Where Octane AI shines — and where it falls short

Strengths:

  • Built for Shopify, with the catalog, cart and customer data connected out of the box.
  • AI features that cut the setup time of a large product quiz.
  • Deep Klaviyo sync, so quiz answers drive segments and flows.
  • A focus on customer data and list growth, not just recommendations, which helps merchants lift conversions over time.

Trade-offs:

  • Shopify only; no WooCommerce, BigCommerce or custom sites.
  • Credit pricing is hard to predict, and AI features spend credits.
  • Basic allows only two quizzes; A/B testing, custom CSS and advanced logic need Plus.
  • A competitor notes there is no native Shopify Flow support and no generic webhooks (Lantern, not confirmed by Octane's docs).

How Octane AI compares

  • Typeform: general forms and quizzes for any site, without Shopify product logic.
  • involve.me: quizzes, calculators and funnels for any website, priced by submissions.
  • Outgrow: interactive calculators and quizzes for lead generation across platforms.
  • Popupsmart: pop-ups and opt-in forms without the quiz and recommendation engine.
  • Klaviyo: the email and SMS platform Octane AI feeds; many stores use both.
  • Shopify: the store platform Octane AI runs on.

Is Octane AI worth it?

Octane AI is worth it for Shopify brands with a large or personal catalog, such as beauty, skincare or supplements, that want a product quiz to lift conversion rates and grow an email list with real preference data. The AI features make a complex quiz faster to build, and the Klaviyo sync turns answers into segments. It is less of a fit for small stores that need one simple quiz, for stores off Shopify, or for teams that need a predictable monthly bill, because credits and overage move with traffic. If you want help planning a quiz or connecting it to your email flows, the ecommerce and low-code agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can take it on.
