Overview

Intercom review

This Intercom review covers what Intercom is used for, its key features, Intercom pricing and the Fin AI agent's outcome-based pricing, the 2026 rename and Salesforce acquisition, where it shines and falls short, and how it compares with other tools. Intercom combines a shared inbox, ticketing, a help center and in-app messaging with Fin, an AI agent that answers customer conversations on chat, email, phone and other channels. The human team picks up what Fin hands over, with the full context of the conversation and the customer record. Intercom is built mainly for software companies and digital-first businesses whose customers already use a web or mobile app.

What is Intercom used for?

Teams use Intercom to run customer support, proactive support and outbound messaging from one place, across the entire customer journey from onboarding to renewal. Typical uses are live chat on a website or inside a product, email and ticket handling in the Intercom inbox, a self-service help center, onboarding tours and in-app messages, and outbound messages about new features or account issues. Fin, the AI agent, answers common and complex queries from your knowledge base, and hands the rest to a human with the customer data attached.

The main reason companies choose Intercom today is Fin. Support teams with a high support volume use it to cut support costs and resolution time without hiring for every spike in ticket volume or conversation volume. Customer operations leads use the reporting to see which topics Fin handles and where the customer experience breaks down. Product teams use the Messenger to talk to real users inside the app. Mid market and large teams at SaaS companies are the core customers, and the mid market is where the Advanced plan fits best; early-stage teams can use a startup program to get started at low cost.

Key features

  • Fin AI agent: answers customer questions from help center articles, custom content, guidance you write and data connectors to your own systems. It works over chat, email, phone (Fin Voice), Slack, Discord and WhatsApp, with multilingual support (Intercom Help).
  • Intercom inbox and ticketing: a shared inbox for chat, email and tickets, with assignment rules, SLAs and collaboration between teams.
  • Messenger and in-app messaging: a chat widget for websites and mobile apps, plus product tours, banners and checklists.
  • Help center: a knowledge base for self-service that Fin also uses as a source.
  • Proactive support: outbound messages, emails and campaigns triggered by customer behaviour.
  • Copilot: an AI assistant for human agents that drafts replies and finds answers.
  • Workflows and reporting: no-code automation for routing and handoffs, and AI-powered reports on resolution rate, customer experience and team performance.
  • Integrations and API: connections to CRMs such as Salesforce and HubSpot, and a REST API for customer data.

Intercom pricing

Intercom charges per seat for the help desk and per outcome for Fin. The figures below come from the Intercom pricing page as of September 2026, billed annually.

  • Essential: $29 per seat per month. Includes Fin, the shared inbox, Messenger and a help center.
  • Advanced: $85 per seat per month. Adds more automation and 20 free Lite seats.
  • Expert: $132 per seat per month. The top plan for enterprise scale, with 50 free Lite seats.
  • Fin AI agent: $0.99 per outcome on every plan.

An outcome is counted when the customer confirms the issue is resolved, when there is no follow-up request after Fin's answer, or when Fin completes a workflow or hands over as instructed. Fin is charged once per conversation, even if it answers several questions in it. Full seats are needed to reply to customers. Lite seats are for internal collaboration only.

Add-ons, free tier and trial

Add-ons are priced on top: Copilot at $29 per agent per month billed annually ($35 monthly), the Pro add-on at $99 a month, and Proactive Support Plus at $99 a month for 500 messages. SMS, WhatsApp, email campaigns and phone are pay-as-you-go. There is a 14-day free trial, no credit card required, and a startup program offers up to 93% off plus a year of Fin free. There is no free plan or free tier, so support teams that need a free option at low volume should look at the alternatives below.

The real cost of Intercom at enterprise scale

The cost surprise to check is the pricing model itself. You pay per seat, per Fin outcome and per add-on, so the real cost grows with support volume, not only with team size. A team with 5 agents on Advanced pays $425 a month in seats before any Fin outcomes; 2,000 outcomes add $1,980. Fin can also be used without the Intercom help desk, on top of Zendesk or Salesforce; third-party reviews report a minimum of 50 outcomes a month for that setup (Macha).

What is Intercom called now? The rename to Fin and the Salesforce acquisition

In May 2026 the company renamed itself from Intercom to Fin, after its AI agent. Salesforce signed a definitive agreement to acquire Fin on 15 June 2026 for about $3.6 billion (MarTech) and completed the acquisition on 10 September 2026 (Salesforce). According to Salesforce, Fin now sits in Salesforce's AI Labs, serves more than 30,000 companies, reports an average resolution rate of 76%, and keeps working with the help desks and systems companies already use.

For customers, the help desk is still sold as Intercom at intercom.com, with Fin as its AI agent. Salesforce has not announced pricing changes. If you sign a longer contract now, check what it says about price increases and product changes after the acquisition.

How the Fin AI agent handles complex queries with data connectors

The Fin AI agent reads your help center articles, custom content and live data from connected systems. You add guidance in plain language, such as the communication style to use or when to hand a customer to a person. Fin then gives accurate answers in the Messenger, email or on the phone, and can take actions through data connectors, such as checking an order status. When it cannot resolve a question, it passes the conversation to the human team with the full context, so customers do not have to repeat themselves.

Fin also works outside the Intercom help desk. Support operations on Zendesk, Salesforce or another support platform can add Fin without moving the inbox and keep their support operations running. Many support teams test Fin this way before a full switch.

Is Intercom Fin AI legit? Resolution quality and customer experience

Fin is a real, widely used AI agent from an established company, now part of Salesforce. Its answers come from your own content, so resolution quality depends on a good knowledge base and clear guidance. Fin can take actions through data connectors, such as looking up an order or changing a subscription, but those need setup and sometimes engineering resources. Test it on real customer conversations during the trial, and review the conversations Fin marks as resolved before you trust the numbers. The AI features improve support quality most when the knowledge base is kept up to date.

Where Intercom shines — and where it falls short

Strengths:

  • Fin reports a 76% average resolution rate, and you pay only per outcome.
  • Help desk, Messenger, help center and proactive support in one product.
  • Strong in-app messaging for SaaS and mobile products.
  • Human agents get the full conversation and customer context on handover.

Trade-offs:

  • Costs combine seats, outcomes and add-ons, so they are hard to forecast.
  • No free plan or free tier; the entry plan is modest, but advanced features such as more automation sit on higher tiers.
  • Less suited to classic email-heavy or phone-first support than dedicated help desks.
  • Roadmap and pricing questions after the Salesforce acquisition.

How Intercom compares with the best Intercom alternative for your team

  • HubSpot: HubSpot Service Hub, the AI-powered help desk in HubSpot and the better fit if your sales and marketing already run on HubSpot's CRM.
  • Crisp: a lower-cost chat and help desk with a free tier for small teams.
  • Giosg: live chat and AI agents for European sales and service teams.
  • ChatBot: a chatbot builder for website support without a full help desk.
  • Landbot: no-code chatbots for lead capture and simple support flows.
  • Chatfuel: AI chatbots for WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.

Zendesk, Freshdesk and the open-source Chatwoot are other common Intercom alternatives. The best Intercom alternative depends on your required features: a free plan, flat pricing, phone support or a CRM you already use.

Is Intercom worth it?

Intercom is worth it for SaaS and digital-first companies with a steady support volume that want Fin to resolve a large share of conversations and a Messenger inside their product. The outcome-based pricing means you pay for results, and the help desk is mature. It is less of a fit for a small business on a tight budget, for support teams that mostly handle phone or email, or for companies that need a predictable flat price for support. If you want help setting up Fin, workflows or integrations, the customer service and low-code agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can take it on.
