Overview

Popupsmart review

This Popupsmart review covers what the popup builder is used for, its key features, Popupsmart pricing, how it works with Shopify and WordPress, where it shines and falls short, and how it compares with other tools. Popupsmart is a hosted web app: you build popups in a drag and drop editor, choose who sees them and when, and install one line of JavaScript on your site (Popupsmart facts). Changes to a live campaign take effect without redeploying the website. The company was founded in 2018 by Emre Elbeyoğlu, is registered in Delaware, and says more than 20,000 websites use the popup builder.

What is Popupsmart used for?

Popupsmart is used to capture leads and convert visitors before they leave. Typical campaigns are email capture popups that grow a subscriber list, exit intent popups with a discount code, cart abandonment offers, spin to win wheels, announcement bars, and slide-ins that promote a webinar or a new product. Ecommerce brands use it most, especially on a Shopify store, but marketers and agencies also use it on WordPress, Webflow and custom sites to collect leads without asking a developer.

The idea is simple: a small share of website traffic signs up if you ask at the right moment, with the right offer. Popupsmart lets you pick that moment using visitor behavior, traffic source, page content, device and location, so each popup reaches its target audience. You then measure the conversion rate of each popup and keep the ones that grow your email list and bring in new customers.

Key features

  • Drag and drop editor: build popups, floating bars, slide-ins, full-screen overlays and teaser popups from templates, or start from scratch. Custom CSS is available for finer control.
  • AI popup builder: describe the campaign and the AI generated popups give you a first draft in under 30 seconds, which you then customize in the editor. AI Smart Mode, the AI popup feature, is included in every paid plan.
  • Targeting and triggers: more than 18 options, including exit intent, scroll depth, time on page, page URL, device, operating system, country and returning visitors.
  • A/B testing: split-test two versions of a popup to see which one gets more conversions. A/B testing is part of the advanced features on the Advanced plan and higher.
  • Integrations: send leads to Mailchimp, Klaviyo, HubSpot, Brevo, SendGrid, Slack, Google Analytics or Zapier, and to other tools through webhooks.
  • Smart tags: personalize popup text with data such as the visitor's city or the product on the page.
  • Analytics: views, conversions, opt ins and conversion rate per campaign, so you can see which popup features work for your audience.
  • GDPR compliance: collected data is stored in EU regions (AWS Dublin and Microsoft Azure North Europe), and you can add consent checkboxes to forms.

Popupsmart pricing

Popupsmart pricing is based on monthly pageviews, and every paid plan includes unlimited popups. The plans below come from the Popupsmart pricing page as of September 2026.

  • Free plan: $0. 5,000 monthly pageviews, 1 website, 1 live popup and 100 emails a month.
  • Basic plan: $39 a month or $390 a year. 50,000 pageviews, 3 websites, unlimited popups, no Popupsmart branding.
  • Advanced: $69 a month or $690 a year. 100,000 pageviews, 5 websites, A/B testing.
  • Pro: $99 a month or $990 a year. 250,000 pageviews, 7 websites, 2 team members.
  • Expert: $159 a month or $1,590 a year. 500,000 pageviews, unlimited websites, 4 team members.

AI features and priority support come with every paid plan; the free plan gets standard support. Larger sites can ask for an enterprise plan. Through the Shopify app, plans are billed every 30 days in USD. There is a money-back guarantee of 7 days on monthly plans and 15 days on annual plans.

The cost surprise to check is the pageview meter. Popupsmart counts pageviews on every page where its script loads, not only pages with a popup. A growing site can move up a tier quickly, and Popupsmart itself says very high-traffic sites are a weaker fit for this pricing. Load the script only on the pages you need, and check your monthly pageviews before you choose a plan.

How to create popups with Popupsmart on Shopify and WordPress

Create a free account in the browser, then pick a template or let the AI build a draft of AI powered popups. Choose the goal: email capture, a discount code, a call-to-action button or an announcement. Set the targeting, for example an exit intent trigger on product pages for first-time visitors on mobile devices. Then install the tracking code.

On a Shopify store you install the Popupsmart app from the Shopify App Store, with no theme edits. On WordPress you add the embed code or use Google Tag Manager, and on Webflow or any other site you paste the one-line script. The script weighs about 97 KB and loads in roughly 124 milliseconds, according to Popupsmart. Once the popup is live, check its conversion rate after a week and A/B test the headline or the offer.

Popupsmart integrations: capture leads and grow your email list

A popup only pays off when the lead reaches the tool that follows up. Popupsmart can integrate natively with email marketing and CRM apps such as Mailchimp, Klaviyo, HubSpot, Brevo and SendGrid, sends alerts to Slack, and reports events to Google Analytics. Anything else connects through Zapier or webhooks, which pass the form data to your own backend. On a Shopify store, cart abandonment offers can target customers who are about to leave a product or cart page. Popupsmart does not send emails itself, so users still need an email tool for the follow-up sequence. Team members get access based on the plan: one seat on Basic and Advanced, two on Pro and four on Expert.

Where Popupsmart shines — and where it falls short

Strengths:

  • Fast to start: templates, an AI draft and a one-line install.
  • Detailed targeting for exit offers, cart abandonment and behavior-based popups.
  • Many native email marketing integrations to grow an email list, plus webhooks and Zapier.
  • Unlimited popups on every paid plan, which makes it cost effective for small stores and growing businesses.
  • A usable free plan to test a single popup.
  • EU data hosting for GDPR compliance.

Trade-offs:

  • Pageview-based pricing gets expensive for high traffic sites.
  • The free plan allows one live popup and 5,000 pageviews.
  • A/B testing starts at the $69 Advanced plan.
  • Not an email marketing platform: you still need a tool to send the emails.
  • Reporting is basic compared with dedicated analytics tools.
  • Only one to four team members can access an account, depending on the plan.

How Popupsmart compares

  • Octane AI: Shopify quizzes and personalization rather than popups.
  • Outgrow and involve.me: interactive calculators, quizzes and funnels that capture leads.
  • Klaviyo and Mailchimp: email marketing platforms with their own basic signup forms and popups.
  • Leadpages and Landingi: landing page builders that also include popups.
  • HubSpot: CRM with free forms and popups for teams already on HubSpot.

Is Popupsmart worth it?

Popupsmart is worth it for online stores and marketing teams that want high converting popups without coding and without a large budget. The Basic plan covers most small shops, and the free plan is enough to test one campaign. It is less of a fit for very high-traffic sites, because pageview pricing adds up, or for teams that need advanced multi-step journeys and deep analytics. If you want help building a lead capture setup around your popups, the marketing and low-code agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can take it on.
