Voiceflow
Platform for building AI agents that handle customer support in chat and voice
Voiceflow is a platform for building, testing and running AI agents for customer support across chat, voice and messaging channels.
Overview
Voiceflow review
This Voiceflow review covers what the platform is used for, its key features, Voiceflow pricing and credits, voice agents, where it shines and where it falls short, and how it compares with other tools. Voiceflow is a collaborative workspace where product managers, designers and developers build AI agents together. You design conversational flows and chatbot flows in a visual flow builder, connect a knowledge base with your own data, choose the large language model, and deploy the same agent to a chat widget, phone calls, WhatsApp or SMS. Voiceflow says more than 4,000 customers and 200,000 users build on it, with over 10,000 agents live in production.
What is Voiceflow used for?
Voiceflow is mostly used by customer support teams that want AI agents to answer questions before a human agent steps in. Voiceflow offers AI automation for support: typical use cases are answering FAQs from a help center, checking order status for e-commerce teams, booking and rescheduling, lead qualification for sales, and in-app copilots that guide users through a product. Contact centers use voice agents to take phone calls and route them. Because the same agent logic runs on chat and voice channels, most teams design once and deploy to several channels.
Voiceflow is a no code platform for designing conversational experiences, but it is not only for non technical users. Developers extend agents with API calls, custom code blocks and the Dialog API, so a product team can hand the build to engineers when an integration gets complex. The platform suits small teams launching a first chatbot as well as larger organizations with review and governance needs.
Key features
- Agent builder and flow builder: drag and drop blocks on a canvas to build flows, connecting blocks for messages, conditions, API calls and handoffs. Voiceflow combines "agentic playbooks with deterministic workflows", so an AI agent can reason freely where that is safe and follow fixed conversation logic where it is not.
- Knowledge base: upload documents, help-center articles or URLs so the agent answers from your own data. Knowledge base training is the most common first step, and the knowledge base can be combined with fixed chatbot flows for sensitive answers.
- LLM integration and voice AI: choose models from OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, Meta Llama and others, or bring your own model.
- Chat and voice channels: a web chat widget, phone calls, WhatsApp, SMS and in-app deployment from one agent.
- Integrations: native connections to Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot, Shopify, Google Sheets, Airtable, Gmail and Make, a Function Library of pre-built integrations, plus custom integrations through APIs.
- Human agent handoff: pass a conversation to a human agent in a ticketing system or live chat when the AI agent should not answer.
- Testing and observability: test conversations in real time in the builder, review transcripts, track usage in an analytics dashboard, run LLM-powered evaluations, and move agents through development, staging and production environments.
- Security: Voiceflow lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, GDPR and HIPAA compliance, with private cloud hosting on Enterprise.
Voiceflow pricing: free plan, Pro, Business plan and Enterprise plan
Voiceflow's own pricing page no longer lists plan prices; it describes "transparent, usage-based billing", a free trial with no credit card, and asks businesses to request pricing. The figures below come from third-party guides that checked the in-app Plans screen in September 2026, so confirm them before you buy.
- Starter (free plan): the free tier lets you build and test with a small usage allowance, up to 2 agents and one editor seat.
- Pro: paid plans start at about $60 a month, or $54 a month billed annually.
- Business: about $150 a month, or $135 a month billed annually.
- Enterprise plan: custom annual pricing (enterprise pricing is quoted by sales) with unlimited agents, unlimited credits according to third-party guides, advanced privacy controls, private cloud hosting and a dedicated account manager.
The usage metric is credits. Voiceflow's billing documentation says credits are "the currency that powers your Voiceflow agent": every chat message, phone call minute and AI generation uses credits, at a rate that depends on the vendor and model. Monthly credits expire at the end of each period and do not roll over; annual plans receive the year's credits at once. According to Macha's September 2026 guide, credits on self-serve plans are now counted in dollars, each plan fee comes back as the same amount of usage credit, a chat message costs about $0.005 and a voice minute about $0.05.
The cost surprise to check is seats and heavy usage. Each extra editor seat is reported at about $50 a month on Pro and Business, so a team of five editors pays far more than the plan price. On the lower plans, busy voice deployments and large models burn credits quickly, and telephony from Twilio or Vonage is billed separately by those providers. Several older reviews still quote a fixed 10,000 credits on Pro and 30,000 on Business; that model has been replaced, so treat those numbers as out of date.
Voice agents and phone calls
Voiceflow started as a tool for Alexa and Google Assistant voice apps and now builds voice agents for phone calls. A voice agent uses the same flows and knowledge base as the chat agent, so voice interactions and chat support stay consistent. You connect a phone number through a telephony provider, and Voiceflow reports voice latency of around 500 ms. Voice deployments cost more credits per minute than chat, and concurrent call limits differ by plan, so contact centers should test call volumes on a trial before committing.
Learning curve, support and community
Simple chatbot flows are quick to learn, but reviewers report a steeper learning curve once agents use APIs, variables and several models. Voiceflow publishes extensive documentation and YouTube tutorials, and third-party reviews mention a Discord community of more than 9,000 members. Competitor reviews from Botpress and Synthflow say support on the lower tiers is mainly self-service, and that Voiceflow has no built-in live chat for human agents; handoff goes to a separate live chat or ticketing system such as Zendesk. Several reviews also find the analytics basic for advanced teams.
Getting started with Voiceflow
Create a free account, start from a template or a blank agent, and upload your help-center content to the knowledge base. Build flows for your top questions with drag and drop blocks, add a human handoff path, and test the agent in the built-in chat before you publish the chat widget on your site. Most teams get a first agent live in days and then spend weeks tuning answers from real transcripts. Start with one channel, measure how many conversations the AI agent resolves, then deploy AI agents to voice or WhatsApp. E commerce teams often start with order status and returns, because those answers come straight from their own data.
Where Voiceflow shines — and where it falls short
Strengths:
- Visual flow builder that designers and developers can share in one collaborative workspace.
- One agent across chat and voice channels, with free choice of LLM.
- Strong control: deterministic flows where needed, AI where it helps, plus testing and evaluations.
- Enterprise security: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, GDPR and HIPAA.
Trade-offs:
- Plan prices are no longer published on the pricing page, and credit costs are hard to predict.
- Extra editor seats add up quickly for larger teams.
- Complex agents still need someone who understands APIs and conversation logic, and advanced features take time to learn.
- No built-in live chat inbox; human handoff needs a separate tool.
- Telephony and some model costs are billed separately.
How Voiceflow compares
- Microsoft Copilot Studio: AI agents for teams already on Microsoft 365 and Power Platform.
- Landbot: no code chatbots with a simpler builder and a focus on lead generation and WhatsApp.
- Dify: an open-source platform for LLM apps and agents you can self-host.
- Chatfuel: chatbots for Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp aimed at marketing teams.
- ChatBot: an AI chatbot for websites with a simpler setup than Voiceflow.
- Intercom: a full customer service suite with its own AI agent, Fin, priced per resolution.
Is Voiceflow worth it?
Voiceflow is worth it for customer support teams and agencies that want to design AI agents carefully, test them, and run them on chat and voice from one platform. The mix of visual flows, free LLM choice and enterprise security is its main advantage. It is less of a fit for a small business that only needs a simple website chatbot, or for teams on a tight budget with many editors, because seats and credits drive the total cost. If you want help to design, build or migrate a Voiceflow agent, the chatbot and automation agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can take it on.
