SAP Build

SAP's low-code and pro-code suite for apps, automation and sites on SAP BTP

App builders · Web apps

SAP Build is SAP's low-code platform for building apps, process automation and business sites on SAP BTP, aimed at SAP customers.

Overview

SAP Build review

This SAP Build review covers what the platform is used for, its key features, how pricing works, what changed for SAP Build Apps in 2026, where it shines and falls short, and how it compares with other platforms. It runs on SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) and brings application development, process automation and business sites together, with visual tools, code-first development and generative AI through Joule, SAP's AI assistant. The main reason to choose it is SAP itself: it connects to SAP S/4HANA and other SAP systems with less integration work than a general tool.

What is SAP Build used for?

It is used to extend SAP systems and automate work around them. Typical projects are approval workflows, such as purchase requisitions, vendor onboarding and HR requests, together with forms and apps that read and write SAP data. Teams also use it for bots that move data between systems, mobile apps for field staff, and a single entry point to the SAP and non-SAP apps a department uses. Business experts, often called citizen developers, build simpler apps and automations, while professional developers use SAP Build Code for extensions that need code.

Key features

  • SAP Build Process Automation: workflows, decisions, forms and robotic process automation (RPA) bots in one low-code tool, with pre-built content for SAP processes.
  • SAP Build Code: a turnkey environment for professional developers, with AI code generation through Joule and tools for coding, testing, integrations and application lifecycle management.
  • SAP Build Work Zone: business sites that combine SAP and non-SAP apps, content and tasks in one place for employees.
  • Joule for developers: AI assistance across app development and automation in SAP Build, driven by natural-language requests.
  • SAP integration: connectors and APIs for SAP S/4HANA and other SAP systems, with SAP's security and governance.
  • SAP Build Apps: a visual, drag-and-drop builder for web and native mobile apps with templates and pre-built logic, based on AppGyver. It is no longer sold as a separate product; see below.

SAP Build pricing

SAP licenses the platform through four metrics, as listed on its pricing page:

  • Base user: for people who use the apps, processes and sites built on the platform.
  • Premium user: for people who author content, monitor processes, customize pages and deploy bots.
  • Developer: for people who develop applications, extensions, workflows and automations for SAP S/4HANA and other business applications.
  • Runtime: the application hosting and lifecycle services for development, test and production environments.

You buy it through a subscription or through the BTP consumption models (pay-as-you-go, BTPEA or CPEA). Prices depend on country, contract and volume. A third-party licensing guide from May 2026 estimates about $28 to $46 per automated process per month for SAP Build Process Automation and $59 to $89 per developer per month for SAP Build Code (Atonement Licensing); treat these as estimates and ask SAP or a partner for a quote.

What is free: SAP offers a 30-day trial on a shared tenant with sample data and a subset of features, a BTP trial account for 90 days, and free tier service plans for exploring services such as SAP Build Process Automation before moving to paid plans.

The cost surprise to check is the user mix. Premium users cost more than base users, and developers are licensed separately, so a rollout with many authors and bot builders costs more than one with a few builders and many app users. Apps hosted on a runtime can be accessed without end-user capabilities, so check which licenses your users actually need before you sign.

SAP Build Apps and low code in 2026: what changed

SAP Build Apps was deprecated as a standalone product on 23 March 2026. According to SAP, existing customers keep full access for the length of their current contract, whether they license it through BTPEA, pay-as-you-go, CPEA or a subscription, and SLAs and maintenance stay in place. After the contract ends, new instances can no longer be created. SAP points customers to the unified offering instead, and customers of the standard offering can ask SAP to migrate SAP Build Apps front-end web apps to React or SAPUI5. Some reviews still present SAP Build Apps as SAP's main low-code builder; that is out of date.

SAP Build Process Automation

SAP Build Process Automation is the part most teams start with. It combines workflow management, business rules, forms and RPA, so a single project can route an approval, apply a decision table and run a bot that updates SAP. Pre-built content covers common SAP processes, and automations can be triggered from SAP events or schedules. It is also available in the BTP free tier, which makes it the easiest part of the suite to try.

Where SAP Build shines — and where it falls short

Strengths:

  • Deep integration with SAP S/4HANA and other SAP systems.
  • Visual building, pro-code and process automation in one SAP-governed platform.
  • Joule AI assistance across development and automation.
  • A large SAP partner and developer ecosystem.

Trade-offs:

  • Pricing is complex and mostly quote-based, with several license metrics.
  • Best value only when you already run SAP; outside SAP, other platforms are simpler.
  • Product changes are frequent: SAP Build Apps is deprecated, and names and bundles keep shifting.
  • BTP accounts, subaccounts and entitlements take time to learn.

How SAP Build compares

  • Microsoft Power Apps: the closest equivalent for companies on Microsoft 365 and Dataverse.
  • Microsoft Power Automate: workflow automation and RPA in the Microsoft ecosystem.
  • Mendix: an enterprise low-code platform owned by Siemens, with SAP connectors.
  • OutSystems: enterprise low-code for complex web and mobile apps.
  • Oracle APEX: low-code apps on the Oracle Database.
  • Appian and Pega: process automation and case management platforms.
  • UiPath: RPA and agentic automation across SAP and non-SAP systems.
  • ServiceNow: workflow and service management with its own low-code tools.

Is SAP Build worth it?

SAP Build is worth it for companies that run SAP and want to extend it without custom ABAP projects: approval workflows, bots, forms and apps on top of SAP data. The integration and the shared SAP security model save work that a general platform would need. It is harder to justify without SAP, for small teams, or when budget certainty matters, because licensing is quote-based and the product line changes often. If you need help to design, license or build on the platform, the low-code agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can take it on.
