Websites · Website builders

Weebly is a Square-owned drag-and-drop website builder for small businesses that want a simple site or online store without code.

Overview

Weebly review

This Weebly review covers what Weebly is used for, its key features, Weebly pricing, where the platform is heading under Square, and how it compares with other website builders. As a free website builder and hosted Weebly site builder, Weebly lets you build a website by dragging elements such as text, images, forms and store items onto a template. Hosting, SSL and a basic online store are included, and a free plan lets you start without paying. Square bought Weebly in 2018 and now points new customers to Square Online, so the question for most small business owners is less "is Weebly good?" and more "is Weebly still the right place to start in 2026?".

What is Weebly used for?

Weebly is used for small business websites, portfolios, simple online stores, school and classroom sites, and personal blogs. Typical users are small business owners who want a site up in an afternoon, teachers who use Weebly for Education, and sellers who want an online store linked to Square payments and point of sale. The Weebly editor works in the browser, so there is nothing to install. Weebly users can publish on a Weebly subdomain for free, or connect a custom domain name, bought through Weebly or elsewhere, on a paid Weebly plan.

Key features

  • Drag and drop editor: drop elements such as text, galleries, video, forms and buttons into fixed sections of a Weebly template. The editor is simple to learn, but the layout grid is less flexible than on newer site builders.
  • Weebly themes: a set of responsive templates for business, portfolio, blog and store sites. You can switch themes later and edit the HTML and CSS if you need finer control.
  • E-commerce features: every plan includes a shopping cart and unlimited items, so you can run your own online store on the free Weebly plan. Paid plans add digital goods, inventory management, coupons, shipping and tax calculators, abandoned cart emails, in-store pickup and PayPal payments.
  • SEO tools: page titles, meta descriptions, custom URLs, 301 redirects and an automatic sitemap. Footer code and header code let you add analytics or third party app scripts.
  • Weebly's App Center: add-ons for forms, social feeds, reviews, email marketing and other marketing tools. Many apps are older and are no longer actively updated.
  • Site statistics: basic stats on every plan, advanced site stats from the Personal plan up.
  • Square integration: payments, inventory and orders sync with Square, which suits sellers who already use Square in a physical shop.

Weebly pricing

Weebly offers a free plan and three paid plans, and every Weebly account starts on the free plan. The plans and features below come from Weebly's pricing page, checked in September 2026. From Europe the page shows euro prices: Personal €11, Professional €17 and Performance €30 per month billed annually, or €14, €22 and €40 month to month. US prices from third-party guides are lower, at about $10, $12 and $26 per month billed annually (Website Planet).

Free Weebly plan

  • Free plan: $0. Hosting on a Weebly subdomain, free SSL, unlimited storage, a shopping cart with unlimited items, SEO tools, lead capture and community forums. Square ads show on the site.

Paid plans: Personal, Professional and Performance

  • Personal plan: connect a custom domain and see advanced site stats. Square ads stay on the site.
  • Professional plan: removes Square ads, adds password protection, digital goods, inventory management, coupons, gift cards, shipping and tax calculators, item reviews and PayPal support.
  • Performance plan: everything in the Professional plan plus priority support and phone support. The free plan and the cheaper paid plans rely on the community forums and the help center.

The cost surprise to check is what the cheapest plan leaves out. The Personal plan lets you use your own domain, but Weebly branding and Square ads only disappear on Professional, and phone support is only on Performance. Card payments also carry processing fees from Square or PayPal on top of the plan price, so check the transaction fee for your country before you open an online store.

How to build a Weebly website

Sign up for a free Weebly account, pick a Weebly template and start in the drag and drop editor. Add pages, then drag and drop sections for text, images, forms and store items; the Weebly website previews on desktop and mobile as you go. On the free plan the Weebly site goes live on a Weebly subdomain. To connect a custom domain, move to the Personal plan or higher and either buy a domain name through Weebly or point one you own at your site. Before you publish, fill in page titles and descriptions with the SEO tools, and on the Professional plan or Performance plan set up inventory management, shipping and taxes for the online store. Check the Weebly pricing page for your country first, because prices differ by region.

Is Weebly being phased out?

Partly. In June 2026 Square announced it would wind down Weebly services in 67 countries by 20 September 2026, citing regulation and simpler global operations. In those countries Weebly sites are unpublished on 27 September 2026, and account access ends on 26 December 2026 (Weebly Support; Khaleej Times). In the US, UK, Canada, Australia and most of Western Europe, Weebly continues to run. Square removed the Weebly app for iOS and Android from the app stores on 1 December 2025 and says it has no plans to discontinue the Weebly builder, but it encourages new sites to be built with Square Online (Website Builder Expert). In practice Weebly is in maintenance mode: sites keep working, but few new features arrive.

Weebly vs Square Online

Square Online is Square's newer site builder and the one Square now recommends for new stores. It shares the Square account, payments and inventory, and it is where new e-commerce features land. Weebly still offers more classic website pages, a blog and the App Center, which some older sites depend on. If you start fresh and mainly sell products, Square Online is the safer choice; if you run an existing Weebly site that works, there is no need to move today, but plan a migration path. Weebly has no full export, so moving to another platform means rebuilding pages by hand.

Where Weebly shines — and where it falls short

Strengths:

  • Very easy drag and drop editor for simple websites.
  • A free plan with hosting, SSL and a basic online store.
  • Tight Square integration for sellers with a physical shop.
  • Low monthly costs for a small business site.

Trade-offs:

  • Few new features since the Square acquisition; the platform is in maintenance mode.
  • Wound down in 67 countries; the mobile app was discontinued in 2025.
  • Limited design flexibility compared with modern site builders.
  • No full site export, so leaving Weebly means rebuilding.
  • Square ads stay on the cheaper plans.

How Weebly compares

  • Wix: more templates, apps and design freedom, and still actively developed.
  • Squarespace: polished templates and built-in commerce for design-focused brands.
  • Shopify: the stronger choice when the online store is the main business.
  • Jimdo: a simple builder for small business sites, with an AI-assisted setup.
  • Strikingly: quick one-page and small sites.
  • Webflow: full design control for designers and agencies.

Is Weebly worth it?

Weebly is still worth it if you already run a Weebly site in a supported country and it does what you need: it is cheap, stable and easy to edit. It is harder to recommend for a new website in 2026, because Square points new users to Square Online and the platform gets few updates. For a new business site, choose an actively developed website builder such as Wix or Squarespace, or Square Online if you sell with Square. Other website builders are easy to try on their own free plans before you move. If you need help moving a Weebly site and its domain name to another platform, the website agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can take it on.

Questions

Weebly FAQ

Is Weebly actually free?

Yes. Weebly's free plan includes hosting on a Weebly subdomain, SSL and a basic online store, but it shows Square ads and does not allow a custom domain.

How much does Weebly cost per month?

Paid plans start at about $10 a month billed annually in the US (Personal), with Professional and Performance above that. In Europe Weebly shows €11, €17 and €30 per month billed annually.

Is Weebly being phased out?

Weebly is being wound down in 67 countries, with sites there unpublished on 27 September 2026. In the US, UK, Canada, Australia and most of Western Europe it keeps running, but Square recommends Square Online for new sites.

What is Weebly now called?

Weebly still uses its own name. Square's newer builder is Square Online, which Square recommends for new online stores.

Is Wix or Weebly better?

Wix is the better choice for most new websites: it has more templates, more apps and active development. Weebly is simpler and cheaper, but it gets few updates.

What are the disadvantages of using Weebly?

Limited design flexibility, few new features, no full site export, Square ads on cheaper plans and the wind-down in 67 countries.

Is Weebly a trustworthy website builder?

Yes. Weebly is owned by Square, a public payments company, and sites in supported countries keep running. The main risk is the platform's long-term future, not security.
