Overview
Tars review
This hellotars review covers what Tars is used for, its features, Tars pricing, how the product has changed, and where it fits against other chatbot tools. Tars, from Tars Technologies Inc. (hellotars.com), started with conversational landing pages: forms that ask one question at a time in a chat window. Today it sells itself as an AI agent platform for customer experience. In a no-code, drag-and-drop builder you configure an AI agent with knowledge bases, behavior rules and tools, test it before launch, and choose a deployment on the channels your customers already use. The company says more than 800 brands use the platform.
What is Tars used for?
Tars is used to automate the first line of customer conversations, with an agent that answers 24/7. Typical jobs are answering support questions from a knowledge base, qualifying leads before they reach sales, booking appointments, and replacing long web forms with a guided conversation. The vendor names finance and banking, insurance, government, healthcare, telecom, education, retail and real estate as its main industries.
The vendor's case studies give an idea of the outcomes it aims at, measured in deflection rate and call volume rather than chat counts. Tars says the State of Indiana saves more than 4,000 calls a month and VM Group cut support requests by 45%. These are vendor claims.
Key features
- Agent Builder: set up an AI agent with its knowledge bases, behavior rules and the tools it may use.
- Knowledge base: upload documents and pages the agent answers from, and update them as your docs change; Premium includes 20 knowledge bases.
- AI evaluation: test an agent with synthetic conversations and LLM-judge scoring before customers see it, then update it after each run.
- Tools and integrations: the vendor lists 1,000+ pre-built integrations, among them HubSpot, Slack, Airtable, Google Drive, Zendesk and WhatsApp, plus custom tools.
- Live chat: a human can take over and answer the next message, keeping the conversation context, with one thread across channels.
- Templates: a library of ready-made chatbot templates by industry and use case, such as lead capture and feedback surveys.
- Analytics: performance metrics, topic clustering, sentiment and quality scores to find where the agent fails.
- Flows: the older flow builder still offers branching, conditional jumps, data referencing and inputs such as buttons, dates, file uploads and geolocation.
Tars pricing
According to the Tars pricing page (September 2026):
- Freemium: $0 a month, 50 conversations a month, basic LLM models, 5 knowledge bases, community support and one month of data retention.
- Premium: $499 a month, or 17% less billed yearly; conversation volume is chosen on a slider, with advanced LLM models, 20 knowledge bases, live chat support, ISO and SOC 2 compliance and 12 months of retention.
- Enterprise: custom price with unlimited knowledge bases, HIPAA and GDPR-ready data handling, SSO, role-based access control and a dedicated account manager.
Add-ons are live chat seats at $600 a year each and professional services at $5,000 a year per agent.
The cost surprise to check is the jump from free to paid. There is no tier between the 50-conversation free plan and $499 a month, so a small team that outgrows the free plan pays the full Premium price. Check the conversation count you will actually need before you connect a busy channel.
From conversational forms to AI agents
Tars was known for years as a builder of conversational landing pages and form bots. Its home page now opens with "For years, we measured the wrong thing": the company wants success counted in resolved questions and outcomes, not in chats started. Those flows still exist, but the product now leads with AI agents that answer from a knowledge base, use tools and hand over to a human. Older reviews that describe Tars only as a form builder no longer match the product. For simple lead forms, a form tool may be the cheaper choice; for support deflection across channels, the agent platform is what you pay for.
Where Tars shines — and where it falls short
Strengths:
- AI agents built around measured outcomes, with testing before launch.
- Knowledge bases, live chat handover and analytics in one product.
- Compliance options for regulated industries on the higher plans.
- A long history with conversational forms and lead capture.
Trade-offs:
- No plan between free and $499 a month.
- The LLM provider behind the agents is not disclosed on the pricing page.
- No voice or phone channel, according to a May 2026 third-party review.
- The brand name is easy to confuse with other "TARS" AI projects when you search.
How Tars compares
- Landbot: visual chatbot builder for web and WhatsApp with lower entry prices.
- Chatfuel: chatbots for WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
- ChatBot: AI chatbot for websites from Text (formerly LiveChat).
- Intercom: full help desk with the Fin AI agent.
- Crisp: shared inbox and live chat with an AI chatbot for smaller teams.
- Flow XO: low-cost chatbot and automation builder.
Is Tars worth it?
Tars is aimed at mid-market and enterprise organizations. It is worth a look for teams that want an AI agent to deflect support volume or qualify leads, and that need testing, analytics and compliance options. It is harder to justify for a small business that only needs a smarter contact form, because the paid plan starts at $499 a month. If you want help to build or connect a chatbot, the chatbot and low-code agencies and developers on LowCodeDevs can take it on.
